Check-in protocol/tips for 70.3 StGeorge?

Holy crap current forecast for day temp for race day this Saturday is up to 94 degrees!!! Yikes!

It’s 50ºF right now where I am, I have pretty much zero heat adaptations.

Here is what I see for you guys. Nothing to be alarmed about until into the run

That’s a LOT to worry about - the entire run!! (Ok, and Snow canyon, which I was not at all afraid of given my climbing practice here, but it’s a different story with 90+ heat!)

Well, unless you’re even slower than me (unlikely), I doubt we’ll see 90, or even upper 80s on the climb. But ya, that kind of temp for the run is going to be brutal.

Lower 80s is still really hot for Snow canyon!

Here is your latest view from google

Come on folks, it’s St. George, you pick that location because you WANT a warm race. It’s barely scheduled to get past 80F when you climb thru Snow Canyon. As @ThailandUltras said humidity is low, so it’s not like racing in the Carribbean or Taiwan or Singapore where pouring water on your body just makes you hotter!!!

When is 80 degrees on the thermometer and you’re in the sun, it feels 10-15 degrees more.

The last time the weather was like this for an IM in StG was 2021. It was really hot that day. I remember suffering pretty bad. The run was harder too (up red cliffs parkway and back down). It was a beast of a run that was a real suffer fest.

Will it be wetsuit legal? Just been looking at the trirating ratings and seen they have Sam Long swimming in a bit under 24mins, after the Singapore performance it’s hard to see that happening, especially without a wetsuit on.

Water is cold at StG - like 59-62F. Despite the 95F temp forecast, it’ll def be wetsuit legal.

Here is the thing about the heat, it is not the same this time of year as it is at the end of summer. I know around here when we get the first 89/90 days it feels awful and like a furnace. But at the end of summer after you have gone through 100 days over a 100 to 1120, well 80 feels like a nice spring day.

the people doing this race have no acclimation at all and literally just 3 days ago it was 60/70’s. The same goes for most coming from driving distance, it has been cool everywhere, and unless you knew a month ago it was going to be this hot and were riding on your trainer in a sauna, you are going to be hit with unhealthy heat. This very hot day literally is falling out of the sky on everyone at the worst possible time, so measures will have to be taken to finish on a strong note. Most wont feel the high of 95, but those 80’s and low 90’s are going to be brutal in that desert dryness.

So take it seriously, and like I said, if you under cook early in the race and feel good, you can always make up some great time last half of the run, and cross the line passing hoards of blowups on the way. Time might not be so great, but your overall feeling on your race will be good…

Ya, I agree. If you’re racing, remember to come back and read these “it will be ok” comments after the race on Saturday.

ps - just did an easy run an hour ago and when I wasn’t in the shade, it was pretty warm. And today is quite a bit cooler than Saturday is supposed to be.

I don’t know if it’s that cold. I think it’s mid 60s. After I staged at T1, I went down to the beach and walked out thigh high. Not like it’s bath water, but I am going to swim in my shorty wetsuit and I will be totally comfortable after a minute or two.
