I’m getting really tired of Strava data not being uploaded from my phone… Most of the time my droid runs out of memory and simply doesn’t capture the ride and I can’t use it because Strava is sucking the battery and so on…
All I can find is the Cateye Stealth 10… Any other ideas that are cheap?
Oh, I have a wired Powertap and it’s going strong, not gonna convert any to Garmin anytime soon.

Does it drain your battery because you use it during your ride to display your metrics etc? If that’s the case, then maybe you could get a Wahoo Rflkt (or however its spelled). It depends on what sensors you are using I guess. The Edge 200 does not support any sensors. I don’t know if your phone needs to have its 3g/4g enabled to transmit to the Rflkt… DCRainmaker even reviewed the Rflkt+ which also adds native ANT+ but I think that was just a kickstarter project. Still, worth looking into as an alternative.
By the way, I’m fairly sure that you can disable your data connection as long as you leave your GPS on, saving you even more juice on the battery. Just turn it back on when you want to upload it.
Edit: just saw you’re talking about an Android phone, then the Wahoo option won’t work.
The Cateye Strada Smart should also be an option as it uploads to Strava, I believe it’s finally just shipping this week or so - down to $79 I believe.
Are you running Strava as your head unit, or is the phone off and in your jersey pocket with Strava running in the background. The latter will provide much longer battery life.
The cheapest option may to be a supplemental battery for the phone (<$20).
Off and in my pocket… It’s a Kyocera Hydro I… Not alot of memory but good for riding as it is shock proof and water proof. Hydro II has a bit more memory but I don’t think that really solves the issue.
(I know you said no phone but…) I’ve been thinking about getting a prepaid Moto G and not activating the phone part of it. You get a wifi/gps device for ~$75. Download music and podcasts on it too. With no 3G/4G activated, the battery should chug along just fine.
Will the Garmin 305 upload to Garmin Connect like a 910XT?
If so, what are the major drawbacks (aside from having fewer display fields) of permanently using a FR 305 as a bike computer?
Yes, except that the connection is wired and not using an ANT+ stick (which is finnicky at best, anyway). I don’t see major drawbacks - there even seems to exist a quick release bike mount, but I don’t know how stable that is.
