Cheap and convenient hand degreaser

I work on my bike alot at home but can never find that really good citrus hand degreaser that you see hanging on the wall in most bike shops. I just discovered that Soft Scrub orange cleanser does the trick just as well and you can probably pick it up in any grocery store.

FWIW…

…and that smell…yummmmmm
.

Personally, I’d try to avoid getting degreaser on my hands.

Try getting a box of medical exam gloves and wearing those while working on your bike. Keeps your hands clean and you don’t have to put chemicals on your skin.

You can get a box of 100 2-ply nitrile gloves from harbor freight for $13. They will hold up a lot better than latex gloves. Or a pair of heavy duty chemical gloves from home depot will work, just can be a little messier.

That’s good point. But even though it may be safer, working on my bike with latex just isn’t the same. Do you think I can geet sheepskin gloves?

Yup, I get the "Fast orange " by permatex at lowes . Also if you do a lot of work the 20- $40 solvent tank is the way to go - chains and cassettes are 90% of the mess .

I use jet fuel / kerosene-some don’t like the smell but its better than gas - I guess a simple green water mix might work. Get a bit of WD40 on your fingers, so they absorb less grease, wipe/grab with news paper / TP / old rags. Nothing like a clean chain and cog set.

I use plain old DAWN (“DAWN gets grease out of your way”). I simply squeeze a bunch in my greasy (dry) palms work it in really good and then rinse with hot water, repeating as necessary.

I’ve always used plain old dishwashing liquid, and a teaspoon of sugar to scour.

liquid version of lava soap works pretty well too.

Just got the med exam gloves. Powerderless. They do make your hand sweat, though. But in case a buddy drops by and needs an “annual”, you are ready for him.
