Bruce got 5th…still freakin’ incredible! I’ve known his family since I was very young and have been watching him do tri’s forever… he’s a machine!
Yeah…you are right…and I heard rumors he won lifetime fitness tri the day before! So, 33% of 55 is 18. Did you qualify? I didn’t. I came in 38th out of 66 in the 25-29 male a.g. all because of my terrible run!!! Oh well…I have had 2 top 5 finishes and a top 10% and a 20% overall finish in my last 2 tris. I guess it’s time I faced a real course and some serious athletes. I mean…I saw some girls that were banging those hills and that you don’t see everywhere!
There is a nice little video on the Times Free press website from the race. Slowtwitchers Marty Gaal and Brent Lorentzen are interviewed.

Enjoy,

Herbert are you doing Cedars or Pulaski Monster tri? I am trying to decide if I am going to do either?? Can you tell me about the course and races?
That’s what I got…18th would have qualified. I got 10th. Oh my goodness!!! Put June 7-8th, 2008 on my calendar! I’ve never been to Portland!!! WOWSERS! I am so pumped! I sure hope I can go… thanks for the math reinforcement. There are many reasons that I am in a field that requires very little math, and the math we do use either is done by experts or is very basic!
Thanks for posting the video, Herbert! Very neat. Course was great and challenging. I was glad the weather held pretty good (I was worried it would be very hot for those of us starting so late - I was racer 1107 out of 1204 to go). Marty and I had never been to Chattanooga before and its a really neat city; hope we can get back over there and spend some more time at some point.
Bri,
What an awesome race both you and Marty had. Wow. I mean you missed first place overall female by a few seconds. Very impressive indeed.
And Marty just rocks anyhow. Am I glad he is not in my age group. ![]()

Now I know who you are… you were HAULING! (Saw you, the other girl in our AG, and then April on the run…on the wooden part). Made me feel better to know that 3 of the top 5 were in my age group! Dang girl… How on earth do you go so fast on the bike. I am still pretty new at this whole thing, but man, did I need to be a lot better on the bike. My husband checked the results as I was sitting with our little dog after the race and told me that before OA had been pulled, I was 13th, but then he said that the top girl (you) in my AG beat me by 20minutes!!! My first thought was CRAP that’s fast! Congrats on a great race. It was a challenging course but a fun race. Fantastic job!
Great race yesterday. Had lots of fun. I make the third person that dropped their chain, just in this thread alone, and also going from big to little at 15. The bike was tough, but was what I would call, an almost perfect course. I qualified for AG nationals next year, but qual’d this year and didn’t go. My swim was 3 minutes slower this year, and I am swimming faster overall. Proof that the current was definitely not a significant factor in swim times this year. I will be back next year. I like this race a lot. Also, the downtown Chattanooga area is really user friendly, nice, and getting nicer all the time.
Hearing all the dropped chain stories, maybe people won’t mock me anymore for riding in the BIG Ring so much. ![]()
I actually indeed only used the BIG Ring on that course and on some sections wished for even bigger gearing.
Herbert
I’m with you, I only used the big ring and didn’t have any problems other than spinning out on the downhills. I think I might have accidentally left a 12 in the back from the last race. Some of those downhills made me wish I had a pizza pie ring up front.
Wish they would hurry up an post the splits!!!
me too! I know that that was a big race and that there were a few snags in timing, so that may be part of it (that and I know everyone is EXHAUSTED!) but I think the race went beautifully!!! I love the big barrels separating me from other traffic, way more than cones…I know that sounds silly, but I liked it!
Anyone hear/see the guy who crashed? A buddy of mine said they saw someone down still clipped in and that they were coming for the rider, but that is all I know…
Yeah…that’s what I am sayin’…but for your sake…I hope you didn’t get beat by just a couple of seconds…That makes it even more frustrating when you think “I could have not done this or that and won”. I have missed placing a couple of times this year because of seconds!! Oh well, I got three or four more chances soon to place. Are you doin’ Pulaski or Cedars?
Yo, BigRings, maybe you boys would run a little faster if you’d spin a wee bit on the bike…wink, wink.
I’ll be doing Cedar’s for sure and am thinking about Pulaski too.
