Anyone out there do the Charleston marathon this past Saturday? If so, did anyone show the course to be long?
I had 26.4 which seems like a ton for a certified course.
Cheers

You didn’t run the measured distance. In fact, no one runs the measured distance. The measured distance is the most efficient route possible. 26.4 isn’t too bad.
I ran every tangent as close as possible. no crowd dodging as there were only 2 others in fromt. .01-.1 due to inefficiency, maybe. .2, not a chance.
I have run (2) 1/2 marathons the past 2 week. On my garmin they measured 13.19 and 13.21 respectively. I think that is pretty common.
Sorry bud, but it’s certified.
USATF Certification #SC10090BS
ok. nice. question still stands. i understand that their are parameters with certified courses. That is why i threw the question out there. to see if anyone else saw the same thing. When lead biker takes you between medians in the road and a turn around is nothing more than a single cone in the road, i dont think the question is unreasonable.
Howd you like the course? The map looked painfully boring
Running .2 miles longer than the measured 26.2 mile course is very common.

In the front of the race? OP said only 2 others were in front of him. Your telling me the top guys run nearly 350 meters more than what they should?
Edit: Sure it’s pretty common when your in a pack of 12k other runners and your having to weave around runners for 45 mins of the race, but if your at the front, I dont see how they would run nearly an extra quarter mile.
The course was not the most exciting. I went because i thought it would be fast. I did not account for the brutal head wind from the battery all the way out to mile 17 and from 23-26.
A finish back downtown would be a big improvement. It would be a good opportunity to help push all racers/spectators into restaurants/bars post race. Might help bring additional race sponsors in future years.
Also, would like to throw out some huge props to James Scott. According to the results, he is 72 and threw down a 3:03. Very impressive
Gives me something to aspire to.
My GPS put me at 26.5 but I started in the back and helped pace my brother through his first marathon. I just figured the extra distance was all the bobbing and weaving through the crowds. He had a 4:30 time goal and I was able to help rabbit him to a 4:03. Super proud of the kid. He works full time, is in grad school, has a daughter, and another kid on the way yet was able to manage that time with only 25 miles per week for 2 months prior to the race and no prior running background to speak of. Excited to see what he does this year in tri. He has signed up for his first 70.3 and has a training plan in place.
