Changing quill stems

Is is correct to say that to go from a quill stem to a normal stem the work has to be changed?

Thanks

Umm . . . come again? Not quite sure I understand your question.

If you meant to say that the fork needs to be changed, this is largely correct. There are threaded to threadless converters available as well, but you certainly aren’t going to save weight going with that option. Why do you want to switch from threaded to threadless?

Yes, unless you get an adapter. I’ve used adapters for years on my Zipp 2001’s with the original 1" forks.

You can use an adapter: http://www.performancebike.com/shop/Profile.cfm?SKU=1594&item=00-5369&slitrk=search&slisearch=true

Easy & cheap
.

Thanks for the quick responses. I’m not trying to save weight, just do not like the angle the quill on my bike has.

One more question. I have an older Allez, around 1995 maybe, is there a way to figure out the size of the bottom bracket? I can not find the spec sheet any where, and what is the difference between english and italian?

This link explains BB sizing pretty clearly:

Biggest difference between English and Italian BB is that English has left-hand threads (backwards) on the non-drive side. English is far more common.

BTW, various sizes of quill stems are still available. Harris Cyclery carries them.

I have a few quill stems sitting around in the basement. Most are around 120-130mm length. What size and angle do you need?
