Chamois cream for a tri?

I have been experiencing more pain than usual during long rides. It is the same saddle that I always use and I have not changed the position too much. I used a chamois cream and it seemed to help. Does anyone ever use it for a Tri? If so do you put it on before the swim or does that just wash it away? Thanks

I don’t know about the cream, but if you weren’t having problems before and you are now, something must have changed.

Maybe your shorts are worn out, causing them to fit more loosely? (Or have you lost weight?)

Personally, and I know this is contrary to Demerly’s advice and conventional wisdom, I think if your gear (fit, saddle, shorts) is working properly, you shouldn’t need any cream.

One thing that has changed is that I am doing longer rides now but still not long enough.

Ah. Well, you can either htfu, find a more comfortable pair of shorts, or try some bodyglide. I remember someone else said they use that instead of cream, and it wouldn’t wash away during the swim. (If you wear a wetsuit, nothing’s really going to wash away during the swim, so you could use whatever cream you want.)

I did for the first time in T1 of the full Vineman Saturday. While my wife and kids laughed from a few feet away and turned off the video camera, it was the best move for me. Just put the tube down my shorts and squeezed. I let the 112 mile ride take care of moving it around. I came off the bike with no issues for the first time so this will be part of my T1 from now on.

What were they thinking turning off the video camera? That would be the highlight of the film.

generous application of bodyglide to sensitive taint and I was happy for IMLP.

My thoughts exactly but I had enough going on at the time so I was unable to direct the filming.
They also missed my T2 full nude towel drop, but I was OK with that one.

What is this? I thought you had camera issues?

Does this sound familiar?

My camera issues are not related to Dave squeezing chamois butt’r down his droors in transition.

AAAHHH! Sort of a do unto others kinda thing. Gotcha.

I haven’t “done unto” anyone. Someone else posted a photo of me from a link posted by yet another person. I wouldn’t propose that the Hinds family put the video up on you tube or anything.

Yep.
Used it @ IMLP… A good squeeze in T1, then another 1 @ SNB!

I was wearing a cycling short however.

Fred.

I use it on long road rides, the little packs are good for those really long ones. I’ve had good luck with using sport slick in the tube format in tris. Seems to be less prone to coming off with water. Use it the same as chamois cream before the race.

I never leave home without if I am going on a bike ride - triathlon or not.

I usually put more than a generous amount on the under carriage before a triathlon swim start. I would rather not muck around with the details of doing that in T1. I pretty much covered my palm with it and slathered it around down there before vineman 70.3 and I was fine in all 5.5 hours of racing.

I was in volunteering in T1 at IM AUS this year and was quite surprised at the amount of people that do use chamois cream at an IM.

I had personally never thought of doing it before, but plenty of others obviously have.

If an act that takes 20 seconds is gunna make your day more pleasant and comfortable, go for it.

OK, so it seems plenty of people are using it, not onto the last part of his question…

Before or after the swim?

I know denner had no problem with it wearing off during the 1.2 miles at Vineman 70.3 but what about 2.4 miles of swimming? Will it be washed off by time I hit the bike?

I’ve found this stuff works better for me than the chamois butt’r…just another alternative. And yes, I apply a lot before the swim.

A few issues ago in Bicycling magazine Bontrager described how he makes his own. I think it was something like 12oz petroleum jelly, 1 oz lanolin, 1 oz triple antibiotic. I let you know how it works.

Mentioned this post to a wrench from one of the women’s pro MTB teams and he says A+D Diaper Rash Cream. Several members of the team have taken to using it and since it is supposed to keep out wetness it should hold up to swimming. Plus you can get it at any drug store.
