Challenge Rancho Cordova update

Just got this email from them. Don’t know if anyone has posted yet. This is the body of the email below. Must have sucked to have to send this out being their first race out here but At least they will make it right and send them later. I have had the misfortune of having items stuck in customs for 3 weeks before it was released and had to pay storage fees on top of it. So sometimes it is out of your control

Our medals, age group coins and backpacks have been held up in customs for several days in L.A. and we don’t think they will arrive before race day. We are still trying desperately to make this come together but have lost confidence in the courier at this point. Our resolve for this will be to mail the these items to all individual participants once they are received on Monday or Tuesday of next week. This news comes with great pain as we always like to cap off the day with incredible hardware and gifts for all your hardwork.

Oh well, weather is going to be amazing, 95 high.

No matter what happens, at least we will have a race compared to poor IMLT. :O(

I have the car packed and ready to go. Just need to get my back to stop killing me. :o(

.

Give Challenge credit, many RDs/race production companies wouldn’t have emailed anything to participants. Instead they’d let them find out at the venue.

There was a customs hold up for Challenge Penticton 2014 as well. The finish line shoot that we usually see the sea of RED Challenge banners, red carpet, branding etc…yeah, all that…held up at customs. The local team did a hell of a job creating a homemade last minute awesome finishing shoot however.

I sure hope this RD in Cordova is getting some refund money from his licensing fees to Challenge that is to include branded merchandise.

Yeah they waited until the last possible moment to hope for the best but it didn’t pan out. I hope this race does well tomorrow and for the future.

give the RD credit yes; but no, NOT Challenge. The RD pays a license fee to Challenge and part of that deal is to include challenge marketing. So give the RD credit yes but if Challenge can’t get their shit to the site in time, that is on Challenge (as happened in Penticton). Cordova might be pure merchandise direct arrangement with supplier from RD and if that is case, Challenge corp. not involved. But again, for Penticton I couldn’t believe it when I found that out. Expensive license fee for literally nothing but a name on a website in 2014.

And lets be fair too, if this was a WTC foul up ST would be calling for heads at the steak. But because it is Challenge we are patting them on the back for giving 24hrs notice of the cock up.

This is a good demonstration that if you don’t generally act like a d**k, people are more willing to forgive you for things.

I hope it does well too but I wish T1 & T2 were both at Nimbus. Seems odd to send families to the quad of a business park community for the finish rather than a beautiful recreation lake where kids can rent paddle boards, boats, etc. while mom or dad is finishing up the race…

Yeah, the strip mall finish could be in the suburbs of Charlotte or Atlanta or hell, just about anywhere.

Steaks and shoots? Where is tigerchik and her backup of ST grammar police?

Hmmm, homeland security protecting competing US corp owned assets?

Conspiracy theorists to the front!

Finisher hats were “held up in customs” at Ironman 70.3 Raleigh back in June of this year as well. IIRC, WTC/Ironman sent out an email before the race to let all competitors know that the hats would be mailed after the race. I received mine a couple of weeks after the race.

Just got back from the race. Boy was it hot today.

Had lots of pro’s racing. T1 had a great setup.

Having T2 was a little pain since I worked T1 in the morning and was racing on a relay so had to get to T2 for my run. Run was pancake flat. I might have set a new PR around 1:25 for the half, but still
waiting for final results. Our relay team, the rocket men, was around 4:15. Not bad for a bunch of old guys over 50.

Looks like we might have to come back next year to defend our relay title.

.

No kidding it was hot!! Swim was great and bike was pretty fast feeling. Got a flat at mile 49 and when I oicked up my bike after the race I had a huge nail in the back tire again and it was flat as was the front tire. Lucky I made it back to T2  i am gonna do a little race report later on this race. More on the race setupand logistics and experience etc. then my actual race

Although it was kind of a hassle with the two transitions, the feedback I heard was great. The water feature right next to the finish line seemed to occupy the kids as well as the finishers (and you didn’t have to worry about supervising little kids going into a lake). The restaurants and Starbucks kept the spouses happy. The swim wasn’t quite “snow melt from the sierras” given that it’s October (June - August, yes), but it’s a great swim course with views of the Sierras. The ride course was fun and fast with great rollers on Latrobe. The run course was flat and uneventful. Nothing like running two loops in a business community :-). However the free beer and refills made up for the drawback of the run course. Overall it was a fun day and worth doing again.

+1. IMO only thing lacking was wetsuit strippers, otherwise great race.

It was a fun event. They could have used one more aid station on the bike, especially since the first one was pretty much useless, as it was on a downhill section. There were also two uncontrolled intersections late in the bike; a guy I know was a couple of seconds from being taken out by a car. Those criticisms aside, I liked the venue and the field size.

Oh, and the post-race beer.

just out of curiosity…

anybody get an reading on total climbing on the bike? My ancient (but trusty) Polar gave me 520 meters (~1,700 feet).

I ask because I get the impression that it wasn’t that much (from the course description).

For a first time event - I’d give it a 95 out of 100.

Garmin gave me 1572 feet and strava said 1724. Pick one I guess.

I got 1550 elev. from my garmin 910xt. I will say it didn’t feel like it but… There was 3 decent climbs that added up a bit and quite a few rollers that were short but frequent. After the right turn on highway 16? There was a steady false flat for quite a bit there maybe.

2021 feet. Garmin 910xt. Never been very reliable with elevation.
