Chainring spacing

Can either shimano and/or campy front D handle a 16 tooth difference between outer and inner rings? The FSA site said the max was 14. I was looking to go with 54/38.

I know that both IRD’s and Campag’s compact specific front derailieurs are designed for a 16t difference. Looking at a Campag’s version, I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work with a 54t large chainring.

Never tried it, but I could see the potential problem for the chain to smack the cage of the fd, as it wouldn’t have enough room to drop or rise for the shift. Your best bet would likely be to rig up a triple fd, as it should have enough clearance. Again, never tried it, and definitely not the ideal solution.

Of course, this begs the question of why you’d want that much of a front chainring difference? You’ll notice huge differences when shifting between the two. My suggestion would be instead to have wider tooth count in your cassette.

I believe, but I’m not certain, that FSA is allegedly coming out with a front derailleur capable of handling a 16 tooth difference.
