Chain Suck - Why?

What causes chain suck? It happens on steep climbs and it nearly throws me off the bike.

I don’t even know what chain suck is. Maybe I’ve experienced it and don’t even know it?

Do you mean on a mountain bike? Usually that’s caused by mud.

Are you shifting chainrings?

It’s usually related to your chainring not releasing the chain- usually because one or both of them are worn too much. Check your ring for wear and/or bent teeth.

What causes chain suck?
Usually you experience it at slow speeds and under pressure. Most of the time it’s caused by burrs on the teeth on the chainring, which don’t release the chain. The simple solution is to grab a round file, and gently (and quickly) file the groove in between the teeth of the chainrings. Should take no longer than a minute to do the entire ring, or just look for the burred teeth.

Is it chain suck, or are you throwing the chain off of the rings?

Is it when you shift from the big to small ring, under load? Also, what size is the frame? I had the same issue with a 51c, and it turns out that this is a frame problem, not a chainring, or chain problem. Something is wrong with the geometry of the frame as it relates to the front derailleur mount, when the bike is loaded. Mine would shift perfectly when in the stand, but when I was on the bike, and pedaling, it would jump off the inside and pull the chain in between the small ring and the frame.
