I just installed my new CH aero covers. My problem is they rub on the cassette and chain when in the largest cog. The rubbing on the cassette is bad enough that I cannot freewheel or ride in the large cog. What am I doing wrong? Is there a spacer I’m missing or a way to get the cover to away from the cassette?
Yes, check the wheel dish, but also check how tightly you screwed the cover down.
Depending on the shape of your rim, as you tighten the screws, you could also decrease the radius of the cover causing it to bow out.
I had to tighten my screws pretty precisely so that the cover fit my wheel and then tape the screws so they didn’t fall out. I also had to trim the cover some at the edge so that it didn’t rub the brake pads.
I had the same problem. I solved it by (1) making the hole on the cassette side larger, and (2) using plastic wire ties to hold the cover to the spokes behind the cassette. I did the second part by drilling a small hole on either side of the first cross-spoke on the cassette side. Then, mount the cassette side of the cover and secure it to the spokes with the wire ties. Make sure the excess wire tie is on the inside and trim it off. Then mount the other side of the cover and use the screw studs to hold it all together.
I know this isn’t how the mfr says to do it, but it is the only way I could stop the rubbing and chain suck. I think it may have happened because I have a 10-speed cassette and there may be less dish on that wheel than an 8-9 speed. Also, I have the cover mounted on a semi-aero cross section rim, which may be forcing the cover material inward as I tighten the screw studs.
