Cervelo P3SL on Track?

Is the cervelo P3SL suitble for track use?

its got horizontal dropouts, so itll work just fine.

You will have to use 130 mm spaced rear wheels.Track spacing is 120.

for big tracks with banking less than 30 degrees you should be ok. It’ll be tough as Cullen mentioned to get your wheels to fit as additionals spacers will likely make the axle too short as well. I think the BB drop would be too low for the 40+ degree tracks especially for the kilo and pursuit with their violent starts. You’d want the BB about 2 cm higher.

As far as wheel options go, you can either build up a 130mm spaced singlespeed hub or try and find an aero wheel that’ll work. I know my old specialized trispoke had such a long axle that you could just add some spacing to move the outer nuts to 130mm. Also, you could use a conversion axle for a trispoke that would allow you to use a freewheel on a road bike, just keep the track cog on.

As far as clearance goes. I would ask if you’re planning on doing mass start races with this bike. If so, you’re going to run into some trouble on anything greater than 33 degrees. You could make it work easily with things like speedplay pedals and 165-167.5mm cranks (fairly standard on track bikes anyway). My Bianchi has a raised bottom bracket, but I ride 172.5 cranks so I just have to remember that I can’t go very slow on the track. That said, I’ve had no problems racing at Frisco (45 degrees). If you plan on just doing the time trial events, you don’t need to worry about any of that, even for something like a kilo. When you stand up on the track, the side to side movement creates greater clearance for the pedals.

I don’t think it could be any worse than the first track bike I owned. It was one of the old, gold-colored DeBernardi’s that had 170 cranks and the lowest bottom bracket of any track bike that I knew. I also rode Look pedals back then. Even on a 33 degree track I had to yell at everyone else whenever we started to go too slow during the neutral laps. There was no way I could’ve done a 250 track on that bike. I would’ve had to go 22 all the time, or else.
