Cervelo P3 Sizing Question

Ok, I am succumbing to the end of season blow-out special pricing on the P3. Unfortunately, I will have to buy mail order without riding the bike. Good or bad idea, I’m not sure. But in case I decide to go for it, I need help in choosing my size. I currently ride a 2004 55cm QR Tiphoon 700c set-up. I also ride a 55cm Kestrel Talon road bike. I am 5’10" tall, 200 lbs., with a 31" inseam. I am crossed between a 52cm and 55cm P3. I figure with all the Cervelo gurus on this forum somebody ought to be able to point me in the right direction. Any advice out there in Slowtwitch land?

I’m about your height but fifty lbs lighter. Found my best choice in a P2K seemed to be either a 52 or a 54 w/650. The 55 seemed just a tad too big. A friend of mine is 6 ft and rides one. Depends on your leg to torso proportions. You can take the measurements off the Cervelo site and compare it to your other bikes. Also might be a good idea to email Gerard directly.

A friend who rides a P3 has almost the exact same fit that I do. He rides a 58cm P3. I ride a 56cm Soloist and 58 Colnago C40 (which is ctt, so a 56cm by normal standards). Both have ~56cm top tubes, and I use a 120mm stem. For TT position, I go fwd about 3cm, and shorten the stem to 100cm. We’re both 5-10", about 32" inseam.

What’s the blowout pricing? I dig my Soloist so much that I ride it in road position, so I kind of “need” a TT-dedicated setup on another bike…

I had the same dilemma as you in ordering a P3 SL - the choices were a 53 or a 55. I’m 5’10 with a 33 inseam. I went with the 53 because I figured I can always go with a longer stem; whereas if the 55 was too long, I’d be screwed. I compete in a few UCI-rule events which means I have to have the 5cm seat setback, which also disposes me to a slightly shorter top-tube. It sounds like you have relatively short legs and a longer torso, so maybe the larger frame would work for you, especially if you use a forward seat position.

I’m still not sure if I made the right choice and won’t know until I build it up and ride it. I’d recommend to you that you avoid my error and shell $150 or whatever for a real fit before you buy.

For what it is worth I am 5’10" with a 30" inseam. I am riding a 55 p3. From my understanding their sizing is “translated” to approximate road bike sizes.

Hmmm, I am a little reluctant to do this over the Internet becasue of the possibility of an error- but it sounds to me like you may be trending toward the 55cm.

If you’d like, give me a call here in the store at (313) 278-1350. I’ll be happy you hash out the sizing details with you so you don’t make a goof.

If you can nail the size I think you will be very, very happy with your new P3.

QRooster,

Does this mean you are going to come off the Dual you had listed??

Regards,

SemerTri in Tampa. Might see you at the DeSoto race this weekend.

www.all3sports.com has P3’s with 10-speed Dura Ace for $2799. Best price I’ve ever seen.

** Tom D. any chance you have any Kuota Kaliburs left? If not could you get me one? I’m looking at January for a purchase time frame. Does the $2300 price still stand?**

Dave

Oops sorry saroehrborn I got in a hurry.I meant to reply to Tom.

52
.

The blow-out pricing is $2799 at www.all3sports.com and that is full 10 speed dura-ace.

Yeah, that is a pretty good price. For just 5 bills more than the bare frame, you get some D/A stuff, decent training wheels, etc. Of course, I’m a Campy guy, so all that would have to go. Too many wheels around here that are Campy 10speed! Maybe I should buy one and part it out!

QuintanaRooster → you have a new QR TiPhoon and still want a P3!? How comes?

Regards

Martin

Looks like a great deal to me £1700 for frame/fork in the UK?!

Are these bikes really the mut’s nuts?

I am in the same dilemma as Jens and a few other people. I am 5’10.5" (got through the .5 in) and I am on the fence between a 53 and 55. I ride a 56 TT road bike. I will probably ride the bike 77-78 degrees. I spoke to Cervelo at the show and they seem to think a 55 would work. I am actually going to wait and see how Jens’ fitting goes! Thanks Jens!

be well,

"QuintanaRooster → you have a new QR TiPhoon and still want a P3!? How comes? "

Well Kreutzer, that is a good question. My Tiphoon is full Ultegra and I see this as an opportunity to go lighter and maybe in the long run faster. I haven’t succumbed yet. Don’t get me wrong, I do like my Tiphoon. It has served me very well. I guess maybe I’m just a sucker for a good deal or at least what seems to be a good deal in the full Dura-Ace P3 at $2799.

I’m buying one of those myself. Keep your hands off the 48cm - that one’s got my name all over it. g Dang I’d better get hoppin’

Rooster et al:

I have a similar question. Road racer 5’9, 155lb, 31.5" inseam. I have a 700c disc and tri-spoke so switching to 650 (and a 54 cervelo) is out. I used to have a 52 P2K that seemed cramped using the 78 degree effective seatpost setting. Unfortunately at the time I did not try longer stem, etc. to try and get a better fit. I also have a small P2T (track) that has a geometry similar to the 52 and fits fairly well but I use the 75 degree seatpost setting in mostly mass start events. On the road I ride a 54cm eff top tube with a 100mm stem and roughly middle of the rails placing with the saddle.

I am looking at a new TT bike for stage races (i.e. no running). I would like a P3 and am again considering 52 or 55. Looking at the geometry a 55 will fit using the 78 degree seatpost setting but might be large should I want to go 75. Assuming the seattube is not an issue here is my thinking:

55 at 78 with 100mm stem
55 at 75 with 80mm stem
52 at 78 with 120mm stem
52 at 75 with 100mm stem

Assuming I want to have a rotated position on the bike (78) on the 55 I might be on a bike a little large for me but have a little more control with a 90 or 100mm stem. On the 52 the size is more appropriate but perhaps a little more weight forward than would be optimal.

Based on my assumptions I’m thinking a 52 will work. Does this sound right? Is 5’9" right in the middle of the 52 sizing or on the border of 52 and 55?

Thanks,

Kevin

Kevin,

Interestingly, the P3SLs are sized differently. Anyway I was going through the same process as you and it appears that a 53 P3SL (700)would be exactly what you are looking for, if the $200 or doesn’t stop you.

Good Luck!
