Cervelo P3 and Hed Third Brake

I recently ordered a third brake lever to put on my stock '05 cervelo P3. This is mostly for use in team time trials so don’t flame me on that part. I got the right shimano lever to go to my rear brake (after what I read here, this didn’t sound unreasonable).

I got a call from my bike shop that said my shifters were “put on backwards”. Before I called them back I was going to post and see what you guys said. Then they called me late last night and said they “fixed my bike and installed it anyway”. Before I got off hopping mad since I’m not really sure what they are talking about … HELP!

My right shifter is such that to make it harder I pull it down towards me, and to make it easier I push it away. The shifter curls up towards my nose. Ha, kind of like your palm is up and you’re giving someone the finger. Is this backwards? The left shifter looks the same, but easier is down and harder (big ring) is up.

Does anyone have a third brake lever and can send me a picture of what it should look like installed. Maybe it isn’t compatible with my bars?

Thanks

there have been some discussions on upside down vs. right side up before. I believe that using the standard way to mount the bar ends, your left would be correct and your right backwards. BUT, there are many that have it the way that you do, it comes down to preference. However, IIRC with some aerobars and maybe the HED lever, can’t remember, it can only be done one way with correct cable routing. do some searches, but I think that this thread will answer your question

I have Hed bars on my 2006 Cerevelo P3C with the third brake on the right aero bar next to the rear derailer shifter. When I pull the shifter all the way up I am in the biggest cog (easiest to pedal) and push it forward and down it goes to the smallest and hardest to pedal cog. I like this arrangement, however you need to pay attention to the cablel splitter under the bar (it connects the two brake levers). If you have a velcro strap around the bar to hold a water bottle bracket in between the bars part of the splitter cable might hang up on it. This can result in having the brake drag on the rim. Tim

your right shifter is upside down. but that’s not a problem. lots of people prefer them upside down, me included. BUT the problem arises when you want to install the HED brake lever. As the HED Brake lever attaches to the bar end shifter itself, and is meant to work with bar end shifter right side up, with your upside down shifter it would mean the brake lever is upside down.

to get around this, your LBS decided to adjust your shifter back to right side up so that your brake lever won’t be upside down.

Ohhhh, I get it. Thanks for helping out this noob and being friendly.
