Cervelo P2C bottle placement?

Aero gurus:

Where is the best place for bottles on a 2009 Cervelo P2C in a half ironman?

I have seen horizontal bottles between the bars with guys like Lieto…
And the profile aero drink bottle is a classic that I have used in the past…
Conflicting reports from the tunnel re: behind the seat options…

I prefer to have a place to keep one bottle with a thick mixture of Vitargo,
the other bottle just water/nuun.

What is the (current) verdict?

Mahalo!

Aero bottle for your mixture on the seat tube tucked down as tight as possible to the BB and your other bottle horizontal on your aerobar extensions if possible.

You don’t have much choice about the position. There are only one set of bottle bosses on the down tube.

You have to drill new holes in the carbon bottle holder to mount it lower. I have done this a couple of times now with great success. I was able to get my Bontrager Aero bottle tucked in tight to the BB on two different builds I have done so you should be able to drill new holes and get it tucked right in or very close. The lower the better.

Post pictures or it didn’t happen.

This is a bike that I built up just for fun with parts I had laying around in the garage for some local TT’s this summer. Have since decided to go back to a road build with Force and sub 14 lbs.

You do not get much tighter with the BB in this picture.

Before I drilled it out to lower it the additional 1"

Cool, that looks really ship shape. Is that Al or CF? Have you actually drilled any CF frames?

I’m supposing any warranty claims would be blown out of the water though…

I drilled the carbon bottle holder with different location holes to lower it closer to the BB. I have never drilled a frame.

Ahhh, that makes a lot more sense! Missed that point in your first post, Doh!!!

FWIW … I totally agree with BMAN both on where to carry the bottles and to drill out the aero bottle cage to snug the bottle and cage down as far as possible towards the bottom bracket.
.

FYI for anyone thinking of scoring that bontrager bottle–it really sucks. Getting it out of the bottle holder requires precision and dexterity, which is further hampered by the slippery shape of the bottle AND the fact that the top likes to pop off. It also rattles when near empty.

try a Tallac double bottle cage. 2 cages on 1 cage mount.

While the Bontrager bottle has not been an issue to use at all the Arundel Chrono Bottle and Carbon Cage was just a nicer bottle to use.
.

Probably the most un-aero bottle cages you could ever put on a bike.

Is there a benefit for placing the bottle on the seat tube instead of the down tube? My frame only has holes on the down tube.

I just did my final fit for my new 2009 P2 and decided to go with 1 down and the x-lab rear wing (non-carbon) for everything else.

How much time or drag would you think something like this saves? Would there be a noticeable effect for an 18mph avg guy like myself or do you need to be a 23mph guy.

Also, how much less drag is there on the down tube vs. the rear bottle holders?

If you put the bottle all the way down in the triangle, does it make taking it in/out more of a chore?

Got exactly the same. For oly I just take off the x-lab.

Are you talking about the same bike. There are no bottle bosses on the SEAT Tube of a P2C. I’m all for Dremelling stuff like bottle cages and non-structural stuff, but I don’t think Gerard&Phil and would take kindly to putting new holes in a frame.

And to the OP, regular bottle cage horizontal on the aerobars. Grab water at the aid stations and have a concentrated gel flask with what ever potion you prefer.
