Cervelo 2004?

Hey! Any ideas what Cervelo’s got in store for 2004? Do we have to wait for Interbike for the full scoop or is the rumor mill running?

I’m looking at P2K. Wondering if the product line continues and if there are any new features/price/color things happening.

Thanks.

I emailed Cervelo about the 2004 P2K and they told me the information would be available in October.

Personally, I feel (IMHO) the best thing Cervelo could do would be nothing. Their stuff is very, very strong. They maintained the highest standards of manufacturing quality for the '03 model year and never made compromises. This cost them some delivery delays, but, as a retailer, this only served to maintain the value of the brand. Also (and more importantly), it is better to do it right than to do it fast. It was maddening waiting for some of the bikes, but it is worth the wait when they get here. The work they did in the '03 model year will directly benefit the '04 line. If they didn’t make a single change for '04 they would still be (arguably) the strongest triathlon bike line out there. Advice to all '04 Cervelo customers: Buy in December or early January if you want a bike for the '04 season. I think Cervelo will have greatly enhanced delivery for '04, but demand continues to escalate. It will be along time before there are enough Cervelos for every customer who wants one.

I disagree here, some new colours would be nice …

The 2004 P2K will have a new color, and some enhanced spec (wheels, tires). As for delivery of 2004 products, P3 and SuperProdigy have already started (although I believe the P3 batch that was supposed to last until December will be gone much sooner than that). The 2004 P2K will start to ship in October, most other models in November.

And I think Tom is right, even though delivery will be much better for 2004, there is no way we can meet all the demand. It takes a lot of money to grow, and like any company we have limited funds to work with.

What new color for the new 2004 P2k? Can you share that yet? When will pics be available?

From a retailer’s point of view only, we prefer manufacturer’s don’t reveal much about the next model year bikes. It devalues inventory on the floor. Imagine a retailers frustration when a customer comes through the door looking for a Super Kona Aero Deluxe tri bike. The Retailer has three on the floor in the 2003 mdel year. They are all screaming yellow. Next year’s color is passion pink. the retailer says “Oh, yeah, we have Super Kona Aero Deluxes right here!” The customer replies, “Oh, that is the old yellow one, I want the new pink one…” So what does the retailer do with the old ones? He marks them down, takes a hit and hopes for the best. As a retailer, this is not optimal. In a perfect world the transition between model years includes a brief period (maybe 45 days) when there are no bikes in the previous model year available before the new ones come out. That helps us maintain the value of our inventory. And, before you chastize me for being a profiteering, mercenary capitalist I will point out that I drive a dented up Subaru, live in a modest house and spend a TON of money from our business sponsoring the events people in our area participate in. For good tri shops the money you spend in the neighborhood stays in the neighborhood and benefits you directly. Just my .02 as a bike shop guy.

Damn profiteering, mercenary capitalist! How dare you want to make money so you can continue/grow/expand your business!

Anyways, about the only thing I would change would be to have a dealer closer to me, but that is getting a little picky I suppose.

Gerard, have you guys given any thought to selling the One or Dual as a frameset only? Something that would hit the market easily under the $1k mark? Any demand/market for that?

Andrew

or maybe a free bike, I’m sure there would be a market for that where I live.

The website should be updated around Interbike time.

Gerard.

Tom you valid point, but with Cervelo I don’t think it applys.I havent been able find a P2k, let alone fined one in the size I need.

Dave

You’re correct in that we have been sold out of P2Ks for a few months, so it is unlikely any but the deepest stocking dealers still have (m)any left. If that weren’t the case, I wouldn’t have commented on 2004’s at all.

I would also like to see the Dual sold as a frameset. I would have picked one up last week if I could have. If they decide to in the future, I’m sure I still would.

When in Oct. is Interbike?

Dave

We’d love to sell Dual framesets, but we can’t right now (definitely not in 2004). It’s tough enough to keep Dual bikes ins tock, so to spread the frames over framesets and complete bikes would just create bigger troubles and backlog.
