Cervelo - '05 Powder Coating

Does anyone here know where Cervelo has there '05 models powdercoated? According to Cervelo customer service, the job is done in the US, but they had no other answer beyond that. I am looking to have my P2k powder-coated in a similar fashion (matte black with white decals) and would like a reference. I am especially found on this painter(whoever it may be) because of their detail with the Cervelo logos. I want the job to look professional and like a stock bike - not a crazy custom. Perhaps someone here has a tip, or maybe Gerard, you can shed some light on this inquiry?

Well, I asked Phil White this same question and he politely answered with the same rather non-attributable answer: “Somewhere in the U.S.”

There are a number of good quality custom powder coaters in the bike industry. Have you done a google search?

I have, and am aware of some great powder-coaters, but for a truly stock-looking job I would prefer the original source. I think that you even posted on your site that the new SL doesn’t appear to use decals on the bike, but it is poatercoated or etched in some way. I have yet to see an SL in person, so I am just going on photos but I would like an exact duplicate job done on mine.

I believe that the P# SL are not powder coated at all. They are anodized. Anodizing is substantially different than powder coating. If you have an existing painted frames it will be very difficult (read expensive) to get it anodized.

You are correct, the P3 SL as well as the Soloists are anodized, not powdercoated.

Aren’t they done by Hottubes, or something like that in Worcester, MA? It used to be on their website. I know gerard referenced them in a post here somewhere.

I just had an old P3 powdercoated by Spectum in CO. They did a fine job.

Now that we have determined that the frames are anodized, is there anyway that you could give me some info on the shop that does jobs for Cervelo?

Unfortunately you cannot properly anodize a previously painted frame. If a frame is to be anodized, things are done a bit differently from the get-go, slightly different tube preparation, different welding rod, etc. So you can’t take an older Cervelo frame and have it anodized, at least not if you want it to look decent.

Cervelo P3s certainly used to be made in Oregan in a large factory that also produced high end Specializeds, Yetis etc, and this factory also does in house painting as part of the production line. Of course, P3s may now be made elsewhere, plus the painting may be done elsewhere. I don’t know the name of the company that runs the factory (should be able to find it out), but do know that they figured out how to make the curved seat tube.
