Why is it that the lamest, most obnoxious sounds and songs end up as people’s cell phone ringer? If you were listening to the radio, and after one song ended, it was followed by a cheesy, obnoxious synthesized piece of audio crap, you’d waste no time in changing the channel or turning it off. Take that same cheesy, obnoxious synthesized piece of audio crap, stick in in a cell phone menu, and people can’t set it as their ringer fast enough. I mean, it’s not like they enjoy the sound, and in most cases, it’s actually embarrassing to the person when the phone rings at an inopportune moment. The more obnoxious the ringtone, the greater the embarrassment.
And I think it’s unique to the cell phone. Do you think these same people would take that same crappy audio file and replace their home phone ringer with it, given the chance? Probably not.
So, what happened? What did I miss? Why am I the only one who thinks my cell phone should ring when someone calls, and not play a song I - and every single person within earshot - inherently dislike?
I was sitting in a meeting last week, with all the heads of our multi-billion business, and one of the guy’s cell phone rings with the tune to “Magnum PI”. He had to endure about 5 mins of abuse and being made fun of…mainly by the president. Everyone called him “007” for the rest of the day-long meeting. Classic.
I think it is just another extention of the “look at me” syndrome. Everyone wants to be unique and grasp attention.
the problem is EVERYBODY now has a cellphone. so in order to tell that it is your phone ringing and not someone else’s phone you need a unique ring.
Oh, please. You can’t distinguish your ringer (you know, the one coming from directly below your earhole) from another’s after hearing it, oh, I don’t know, *once *before?
I have the theme to “Bonanza” on mine.
I did once hear the theme song to *Dukes of Hazzard *coming from a cell phone. At least someone’s willing to use their wireless powers for the good of mankind.
Vibrate is a feature that solves this problem. I have a normal ring tone and it’s on it’s lowest setting. I set my phone up to vibrate then ring…keep it by my side. Rarely does it even reach the ring portion before I answer it…

Bonanza, you know the classic theatre production where Hoss and Little Joe tamed the wild west, for the good of mankind.

I work in a very noisy environment. so I often don’t even hear my cellphone. let alone feel it.
I am quite proud of my Bonaza theme. When I get enough time, my next theme will be Sanford and Son.
I’ve got Will Ferrel singing as Robert Goulet “YOU"RE PHONE IS RINGING… la de da dooooo, da de da doooo doooo, you’re phone is riiiiinggginnnngg.”
It’s great
Not only that, mine is still attached to the wall and one of them has a rotary dial. It is awesome because when the power goes out, I can actually call Edison to report that there is a problem!
Also, if you call my phone number and for some reason I am talking to someone else, you actually get a busy signal. I find it to be the height of rudeness to be put on hold when I am tlaking to somebody so that they can talk to someone who is more important. Furthermore, if someone were to call my phone number, I actually have no idea who is calling me until I pick up the phone and that person introduces themself.
I do have a cell phone that I use with regular frequency. My rings are pretty cool (I think). I have the Chariots of Fire Theme for all of my running buds, I use the Peter Gunn Theme for most of my other calls. I have one guy’s number where I used the voice memo “Andy, you’re an asshole!” as his personal ring tone. This is because he likes to call me when he is in the same room because he likes to watch me fumble around to find my phone and answer it. Now that is not necessary. My wife has a special voice memo ring too. The funny thing is 99% of the time my ringer is on vibrate so I never get to hear them.
The goofiest ringtone I have heard was from guy at work who recorded the alarm tones from the old TV show Emergency 51 (you know, Johnny and Roy). He is a complete tool sometimes!
My biggest bitch is “ringback” tones. I make daily calls to customers and there is nothign more annoying than having to listen to someone elses favorite music. It is invariably something that A. I never heard of and B. Something that would sterilize a frog if played in it’s vicinity. I would much rather know the phone is ringing than listen to some of the crap i have had to endure.
