This is one area where I wouldn’t have minded a little government intervention. 
You can buy them off me…
Of course, manufacturers can still tie you to their charger if they want.
IIRC, Motorola Razrs needed special drivers loaded on your computer to charge them with a simple USB cable.
Yeah, but for how long? Until the next generation of phones when they’ll adopt the ultra-micro USB standard… I’ve had I think 5 different phones. Not one had the same charger as the last. My current has the micro-USB, but I won’t hold my breath that it’ll become the “standard”.
