Someone told me that my name came up in comments to my dear training partner Cray’s race report. Rather than detract from her achievement, here is a brief summary of my 5th IM:
Someone kicked or elbowed my hand during the swim. (Actually, lots of me got kicked or elbowed, but the other body parts aren’t integral to the story.) Med folks didn’t seem too worried; they taped my fingers and said I could keep going. I did find out that it is very difficult to ride a bike with one hand. I had a good run though, a 4:22, which is fast for me after such a long “warm up”.
I crossed the finish line, did not stop to eat or change clothes, I just said “take me to the emergency room now!!” They xrayed, said it was broken in a notgood way. On Tues, I had surgery to put 2 pins in. I should heal up just fine in a few weeks.
p.s. Richard, feel free to drop me a note at AmyAnderson at austin dot rr dot com.
Way to be tough! You weren’t in the changing tent somewhere around 1:45-1:50 saying your hand didn’t look quite right and had gotten kicked in the swim? If so, I was right next to you and remember it didn’t look real good. If not, it sounds like someone else had a very similar experience. Good luck with your recovery.
Wow… what a race! I’m very impressed. I’ve had daydreams about breaking something and then heroically finishing the race anyway. I hope u feel better now that it’s set.
You must have suspected that it was broken. Did you consider dropping out? U R tough. Good thing it wasn’t your foot.
Damn girl - I don’t know if you’ve got plans to visit Dumbassville, but if you ever do, let me know - we’ll roll out the red carpet for you! You are T-O-U-G-H!!!
Eye-carumba that looks horrible. Good job (I think) on finishing the race. How is it feeling now?
I broke my hand a few years ago and didn’t have it diagnosed for 6 months, but obviously it was nothing like you’ve got going there. I hope it heals up soon!!
