What medicine, pills, or liquids, should I take to control runny nose, body ache, etc…I don’t want to miss this race on saturday, but I feel like crap right now.
Thanks STers.

You said it yourself - you feel like crap. That’s what you will feel like on Saturday and if you like to race feeling like crap then don’t let our suggestions ruin your style. Just remember that there will always be mountains, rivers, trails and roads to run, bike and swim. They’re not going away. You - however, will one day be gone so why hasten it racing sick.

You are right!!! I guess will take it ez and wait for the next race. ![]()
Go to the pharmacy and get some Sudafed! I had this yesterday and I sprung out of bed this morning ready for a swim! Good luck…
I’ve a HIM this sat, got a cold on monday… regular vit C and paracetamol and lots of hot drinks, just about shaken it and its thursday eve… fingers crossed!
I had that problem before Racine 70.3, had a pretty bad virus. The cold virus can take 2-3 weeks to completely clear out. I was desperate. I found a “natural” homeopathic style cure on mercola.com that I tried. It is supposed to give relief of symptoms in 12-14hrs. Kinda weird at first, but does make a bit of sense. You are suppose to lay on your side and put some drops of hydrogen peroxide in your ear until it stops fizzling and tickling (10-15min), drain, and repeat on other side. I did feel somewhat better a half day later. Who knows? It’s worth a try and can’t hurt. Maybe it worked for me, maybe it’s a placebo. He says people swear by it.
if you’re ok with backing off and just finishing it might be ok. I got sick the monday before timberman. I was in bed with a fever for 3 days, got out of bed friday and “raced” sunday. I still felt like 10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound bag, but I just took it easy and got er done. I was very tempted to DNS…but getting a finishers medal from Chrissie was cool.
Having said that…I REALLY could have done without getting a flat tire…that was just mean on god’s part.
head cold and I’d say fine but a chest infection/cold then you will increase the stress on your heart and risk damaging yourself in the long run in my view although I’d still hit the start line myself.
Caught a cold 3 days before IMCDA this year, took Vit C, echinacea, and some sort of zinc cold remedy from the pharmacy. It stayed out of my chest, so although I felt kinda lousy, I was able to get through it. Good luck.
This same thing happened to me last weekend before Rev3. A friend advised me to go buy a dozen oranges and eat 6 immediately. I did this and then ate 2 more later before bed. I was shocked how much better i felt the next day. Kept eating as many oranges as I could handle the next few days along with loads of H2O. Was pissing every 30:00 but by race morning I was ready to roll. Good luck…
Kinda similar; bought Emergen-C packets, 1,000mg of Vit C, I hope this helps. Took today off and my body feels better.
sick myself and i have a race this weekend. I’m taking nyquil right now and hoping to be somewhat better by race start, hope your better also. God Bless
Body aches, I am sure you know what a pain reliever is! Moreover, you don’t want to take anything that is going to drain water away from items such as your lungs like sudafed or benadryl, that’s just silly! A normal cold is fine to exercise under, as long as you listen to your body, and it actually will help you breathe better. The only thing I would do is get something to stuff in your nose and say screw whoever is looking at you, who cares? On the other topic of zinc and emergen-c, echinacea, it only works when you take it at the FIRST onset of the cold, basically right when you feel the first symptoms. Vitamin C can help you along, but nothing is going to shorten it this far in at all, only slightly aid the course while you are having fun. You might squirt some Afrin in your nasal to ensure it is clear, but don’t use it much. You just want to make sure you can breathe through your nose!
Of course, if this is an infection or something more than a common cold, by no means go out and push yourself because you would be setting yourself up for something disastrous! Be safe.
