Catskill Mt. Multisport 2010 Calendar

**2010 Race Calendar - all races are local permit and USAT sanction pending, but here’s what we’re working on for you: ** First, in case you haven’t heard, the planned October 4, 2009 Devil’s Kitchen Olympic Triathlon will not be held this year. The D.E.C. was unable to issue a permit but they have indicated a desire for this race to be held in 2010. Unfortunately, the access road to and from the lake is in poor condition, but they plan on repaving it and wanted us to wait until the road is smooth and safe. April **18 **- Kingston Kinderkop Criterium In honor of the Belgian spring classics, we’re organizing a cobbled criterium in the city of Kingston. Wynkoop Place is an original cobbled climb, 300 feet long, 10% grade, curb to curb so nowhere to hide. Ride it once, you’ll feel it for days; race it 20 times, you’ll feel it for life. Kingston was originally settled by the Dutch. In their honor, the cobbles take on their Dutch moniker, “kinderkop”, or “babys’ heads.” May **9 **- 6th Annual American Zofingen After 5 years of dodging leaf peepers, we’ve decided to move America’s ultra distance duathlon classic to the traditional duathlon season, spring. Still too early to swim long distances in open water, this early May date will allow triathletes aiming for a later season iron distance event to put a lot of hay in the barn, and allow duathletes to do the same for the late summer original, Powerman Zofingen in Switzerland. May **30 **- William’s Lake Sprint Triathon This will be same course used in the 4 race series in 2009, 800 meter swim, 12 mile bike, 3 mile run. A nice way to start the triathlon season in one of the best venues. June **27 **- William’s Lake Olympic Triathlon Now that summer is in full swing, time for a full olympic distance, 1500 meter swim, 40 kilometer bicycle and 10 kilometer run. Mid July - Frost Valley Half Iron Distance Triathlon This race could prove to be the Queen of our calendar. The venue is absolutely gorgeous and offers comfortable lodgings so that we can make a weekend out of it with the half iron on Saturday and a sprint tri plus kid’s tri Sunday. Late August - Battle of Battenfeld 5 Stage Adventure Triathlon Now in its 2nd year, BOB is 6 swims, 5 stages, 4 transitions, 3 runs, 2 bikes, 1 hell of a race. A perfect tune-up for the venerable SOS. It starts with a 1.2 mile hilly trail run, followed by a 6.2 mile hilly road bike, followed by a 2.0 mile hilly trail run which covers 3 pond swims through which you must transport your running shoes, then a hilly 2.0 mile Mt. bike (Yes, you’ll need 2 bikes) then a repeat of the 3rd leg (2.0 mile run with 3 pond swims). The venue is the beautiful Battenfeld christmas tree farm and the race is brought to you by BAD Brewing. September - Devil’s Kitchen Olympic Triathlon & Double Devil’s Kitchen Bike Race The 1500 meter swim will take place in the beautiful North Lake, Haines Falls, NY, in the Catskill Forest Preserve at 2200 feet above sea level.
The 26 mile bike leg descends to the valley below and returns by climbing the legendary Devil’s Kitchen climb which gains 1000 feet in 2 miles and was the showcase challenge back in the days of the Tour De Trump.
The closing 10K run will be mostly paved and not nearly as hilly as the bike ride; we may be cruel and you may be masochists, but we also want you to have fun.

2 Questions:

AZ, can you repeat the offereings on what distances are available?

Frost Valley Half Ironman…2nd or 3rd weekend of July?

As far as Frost Valley, we’re still discussing with the host what works best for them. They’re quite busy with campers in the summer. Whichever weekend it is, we’d need to be out of there by noon on Sunday, so the half iron will be Saturday.

Wow! Hell of line-up John. Taking a break from IM this makes planning 2010 a whole lot easier! W/ SOS as my (hopeful) A Race looks like I’ll have pleny of chances to get act together. And I don’t have to leave our fair state of NY, NICE!

Finally a summer OLY in NY (I don’t count NYC, yuck). This should be huge for you.

This should get some good, healthy competition going bewtween, HVTC, CMMS and Toga - well, as long as Jeannette is with Toga anyway

Good luck and keep up the good work.
Mark

Thanks, Mark. We’re optimistic about the 2010 races and look forward to a great year of training and racing together with everyone.

Is there more info on the Crit and the RR at Devil’s kitchen? They both sound awesome.

I’ll be adding more information on each race as it becomes available to our website, www.catskillmountainmultisport.com

What’s a roadie doing on a trigeek website?

I am a recovering Du guy

I did your Am Zof last year (finished it) and the year before (my one and only DNF to date).

I like the idea of stupid hard stuff.

Cool! If you liked AmZof, you’ll love Double Devil’s Kitchen and the Kinderkop Crit.

(Hey, that has a nice flow to it - kind of like “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.”

For the Frost Valley HIM, will the camp’s lodges be available or will kids be there for summer camp? Also, how are the roads? I go up there twice every winter for Indian Guides/Princesses but hav never seen the camp in the summer. Sounds like a great long weekend if the camp is available.

It almost begs to be spelled Kinderkop Krit. Almost.
Of course, then folks’ll probably start referring to it as the Kingston Kinderkop Krit.

ML, we’re trying to avoid that sort of stuff.

John,

Any updates on the June/July races?

Specifically, Williiam’s Lake Oly? Site shows it’s now on 6/13. And mentions 2 swims, 2 bikes, 1 run. Details? sounds like fun. I can’t make AmZof (wuda loved to see Josh Beck race it!) but am looking to round out the calendar.

Thanks, Mark

June 13th is the Olympic tri at Williams Lake. It’s written a bit vaguely on the website and will be corrected. What it means is the swim is 2 laps, as is the bike course. The standard format and distances are being used. As of now, nothing is scheduled for July. See you soon, I hope.

Looks like Frost Valley will be a sprint on Sunday 8/29. Is FV offering any accommodation packages?

The second half of the bike looks like a blast!
