Cat food!

Me and the wife and addopting two kittens. I am confused on what to feed them. Is there a best food or is it all the same?

First, we will need pictures of said kittens, or else it didn’t happen.

Second… give them dry food, not wet. Keep them on kitten food until they are six months or so (longer, if they aren’t gaining weight. We’ve never had a problem in that area, and all of ours are fatasses by about 8 months :p)

Third: Go with a higher quality food–Nutro or Natural Choice or even the higher end Purina. Ours ate Nutro for a while, but are now back on a mix of Purina Naturals and some other indoor cat formula (NutraMax?). Feeding higher quality food means less waste and healthier cats

The highest quality food is human food prepared fresh from the kitchen. Feeding your pets “dog” or “cat” food is barbaric.

Go to a reputable vet and get what they prescribe. It will be more expensive but well worth it. The stuff you see in the grocery stores is garbage and you may as well feed your cats Big Macs and Dairy Queen. Get the quality food and you will notice a difference in their coat, demeanor and overall health.

Don’t give them Trader Joe’s pet grade tuna. I gave it to my guys and they loved it but it gave them the stinkiest cat farts ever.

Me and the gf just adopted two kittens, we are feeding them purina kitten food, but after it runs out, I think we are gonna get some sort of natural food, I hear its better. we give them wet food as a treat.

I’m sittin’ on a few tons of moist cat food made with with Chinese wheat gluten I’d be willing to make you a deal on.

Dry Science Diet.

funny, my vet also said the supermarket brands are like mcdonalds. At the same time if you look at the labels all the companies are owned by a few and most seem to share suppliers anyway as the recent recalls suggest so I dunno what to make of it all.

My completely baseless theory is that if I can’t stand eating two meals in a row of the same food, neither can my little guy. So I like to switch up brands/types all the time. Hills Dental Diet is a hit with my guy and my sister’s kitties, and Hills/ScienceDiet seem the standard with most vets. My vet also said Purina One is ok so I buy it occasionally as well as Royal Canine. Peta seems to hate IAMs (even though my little guy likes it) so I’ve stopped buying their products. Tried some holistic food; my guy who always complains that he’s starving won’t even finish his bowl.

My mom spoils my cat with plenty of fish and meat, and to be honest my guy will eat anything. Pumpkin, kiwi, apples, rice, ice cream… if it falls on the floor, he’s running with it.

The dry food keeps their teeth clean and strong but if the cats don’t drink enough water, my vet recommends at least one meal of wet food. Of course the downside is that you should brush their teeth. I should’ve started when he was younger; he HATES it now.

oh and ditto, bad food comes out smellier. wet food always stinky.

We feed our one of our cats Hills Natural and the fat cats eat Hills Diet. Our skinny cat fur gets really dry if she eats other brands. Dr. Hill was our family vet years ago, so I am partial. Our dog also eats Hills Natural and Hills Chicken. Only dry for all pets.

It is great you are getting two cats. We adopted two together (from different parents, but about 7 weeks and they get along great) and then took in two strays. All four cats stay inside.

Do not feed your kittens grocery store wet food. Its full of ash which can build up in the their kidneys can cause kidney failure in later years. You can feed them kitten food until about 6 months (like the other post said) but do not feed them kitten food after they have been spayed/neutered. It will make them fat for life.

And no toys on a string!

They are cats. Get the cheapest food available. :=)

They’ll substitute this with high quality protein from denuding your yard of all critters.

.

The key thing to remember with cats is that in the wild, their diet is normally 85-90% protein, with only the odd bit of grass as a carb content. A high quality wet food is normally going to be higher in protein than a comprable high quality dry kibble.

So because we’re trying to give them something remotely like what they get in the wild. we make sure our beasties get some high quality wet food every day for the protein, then allow them to munch on dry kibble as a snack.

I agree, get the cat food with as little ash as possible. I would just find the best stuff whether it be SD or whatever. I had a cat that with kidney disease and it’s not very pleasant. Spend the extra money now on food, so you don’t have to spend money later on medicine.

Feed them good food at a young age , wet white fish , shrimp flavors . Once they are 2 -3 years old dry food only ,it keeps them thin . If there is any safe hunting for them - rats -gofers - mice - lizards , thats what they are suppose to eat .

Most people over feed them ,till they are like a small cow that can barely walk .

speaking of which, my vet also mentioned that the “suggested” food volumes on the bags of Hills etc. are exaggerated. I feed my guy 1/2cup a day and he’s fine. He acts like he’s starving but he’s got tons and tons of energy…

Yeah , Its good to set an amount instead of just a feeding troff. The outdoor cats seem leaner , but its possible for the indoor guys to say thin. Our two play the starving game ( workin the two meal deal ) on us . I have seen less fat cats on dry food .

Friskies Ocean Fish Flavor dry. They love it. When we can find tuna on sale, they get a treat.
