Castelli T1 Stealth and Pearl Izumi Octane Tri Suit

I’ve looked into the Castelli T1 Stealth and I’m definitely interested. I like the idea of it and I was wondering if anyone has ran in it as well? They say it’s made to put on after the swim and take off after the run, but I think you could easily run in it. Anyone ever done this? I like the Octane Tri Suit but the color selection is eh… I know it’s all about fit and it has to be wrinkle free to be as aero as possible.

Thoughts?

IMA bump this thread for I have similar questions.

why would you want to run in the castelli? it would be super easy to take it off as you run along during T2 and then put on something comfortable

I’ve got M and L in the octane arriving tomorrow from Amazon (super cheap right now over there). Black and red seems ok.

I wanted to keep the sun off my shoulders. I get sunburnt pretty easily

ok - I think I’d still switch to something that’s comfortable to run in, but still protects you. The higher aero advantage on the bike is going to come from a top that fits pretty tightly and is going to be less comfortable than something looser that you could use for running. Maybe something like the desoto skin cooler top is worth trying for the run.

I would have thought that most people about wear the Castelli T1 Stealth over their “triathlon top” but under their wetsuit (assuming wetsuit legal) and peel the Castelli Stealth off when they enter T2

yeah I agree. although he’s looking for sun protection too (so something covering shoulders, and with sleeves)

Just got a Castelli T1 top last week and havent had a chance to train in it yet, but definitely dont see being able to run in it, its too restrictive in chest and arms… Thought maybe I was sized a bit small, but after looking at some photos where you can see the difference in the front material and the back mesh (its really visible) for where it sits it seems to fit exactly as intended.

I thought the black and blue color scheme for the Octane was awesome. I love that suit!

I was wondering if being wet would alter the aero properties of the material? any thoughts?

I do like the red/black Octane but I really don’t like the blue one. Castelli told me you could run in the T1 stealth but once again…I don’t know if anyone has ever done it

Has anybody swam with the T1 under their wetsuit? Curious to know if it is restrictive while swimming, or if it is likely to be damaged by being worn under a wetsuit. I envision wearing a tri top under the T1 for the swim and bike, and then ditching the T1 for the run. Is there any reason why this would not work for wetsuit legal races? I have no interest in fighting to put a T1 on after a swim for half irons - might consider it for the iron distance.

I ended up ordering the Pearl Izumi Octane Tri suit for $188 on Amazon. $38 more than the T1 Stealth and I don’t have to worry about putting it on after the swim or taking it off in T2

I am considering the Octane Tri suit, however, I am not a big fan of one-piece suits for half or iron distance races. I imagine it would take quite a bit of time to remove and put the Octane Tri suit back on in the event that you have to bring the Browns to the Superbowl.

Shouldn’t be that much harder than my regular 1 piece suit with the shoulders exposed. If not, I’ll just shit my pants, jump in a lake, and keep on moving

castelli says it can be worn under your wetsuit, but it seems to me that is a MUST. I cannot imagine trying to pull on a skin-tight long-sleeved top after getting out of the water. Its nearly impossible with a sleeveless singlet! if the T1 top saves you 3 minutes over 112 miles, you’d certainly lose all that 3 minutes in T1 trying to put it on. In my opinion it needs to be on under the wetsuit or not at all.

Agreed. Which brings me back to my original question as to whether or not anybody has actually swam with a T1 under a wetsuit, and if so, what was their experience?

I dont think you need to swim in it, it has a full zipper and the sleeves only come down to just above the elbow, so its like a tight-fitting bike jersey. I plan to tug it on as I’m running out to the bike rack. Seems like it would be somewhat restrictive even under a wetsuit, at least for these shoulders.

It’s much harder to take off the sleeved PI Octane than a sleeveless tri suit – just hard on the shoulders to pull the first arm out of that elbow-length sleeve. I think it’s in part because the suit only unzips to the sternum.
