Just got this email confirming my and others’ suspicions. Thank GOD it didn’t really take me 12 minutes to run that last mile:
"After triple checking the run distance at the 2005 Carlsbad
Triathlon,
it has been determined that the run section of the course was
actually
3.4 miles, which is .3 miles longer than a 5K. We apologize for
inconvenience this may have caused you or your team. We will double
check this section next year so as not to have this occur again.
Ya, I just got this one too. I actually started a thread after the race here and said that I thought the run was a third to a half mile long. The swim was also a bit long too. It’s pretty telling when only a couple pro men break 20 minutes for a 5k, and the real telling sign was the cone 300 yards or so past the mark on the ground from last years run…
Gotta hand it to them for coming clean and letting everyone know though, not many race directors do that…
I remember your thread. I thought it was a classy move that they came out and admitted it and apologized. Good for them!
Monty, are you doing the Solana Beach Tri this weekend? Wondering if it’s worth it…
I’m in for Solana Beach this weekend (My 1st time doing this race). The swim is only 1/4 mile. I’m debating on if I should wear my wetsuit or not. I’ll probably go pre-swim the course and measure times but just curious as to what you are going to do.
If I do the race (I’m about 80% in) then I’d swim in tri-shorts. Went for a surf here in San Clemente this morning and the water is around 72, and the swim is just too short to waste time messing with a wetsuit IMO. Not sure the extra float is worth the time to get it off.
9am surf session! I am jealous, I need your job! I was at Torrey Pines Park Beach last night, the water was perfect, I’d guess 72 or 73. High probability I am going wetsuitless this weekend @ solona beach
Ha, ha. We own an internet retail biz. We open the office at 10:30am, so I get in two hours of training and one of surfing every morning luckily, but I work til 6 and then at home at night for an hour or two to “pay” for my morning free time!
Solana Beach Tri…best race of the year for me…I get to roll out of bed and get on my bike and ride two blocks to the transition area! Water temps are up…don’t think it is anywhere near 77 but more like 70-72…but still very warm. If it stays that warm and with the short swim…no wetsuit for me! The jog up the ramp and across the street is as long as the swim takes. Now if I can just get my Carnacs to stay on my speedplays as I jump on them out of T1, I will be in buisness.
