Carlos Sastre's P4

They just did a profile on his bike and although I dig his rotor cranks, what was shocking is that he was running a freaking TRIPLE up front!

Your eyes are fooling you. It’s a double.
The ring of bolt holes on the Rotor sortof look like a third chainring from some angles. There was a great closeup of the inside of the cranks, and I paused it (in HD, on a 65" screen). Double for sure.

Double fo sho, we’ve never even made a triple, especially in the 3D crank. You need 3D glasses to really appreciate those cranks :-).

My favorite part is how they made a big deal out of the aero water bottle and not messing up the aero downtube with an ordinary bottle, then when Sastre is racing, they have a completely separate water bottle in the nook.

only double.

the last triple i can think of is Heras up the Angliru, years ago in the Vuelta.

or if your name was Tshmil (err? i think)… only one ring up front.

Yeah, the current UCI rule situation is pretty whacky, eh?

I just wonder why Vroomen didn’t draw attention to that issue. Are they afraid to call out UCI, worried about confusing viewers? For people who aren’t familiar with the drama that UCI has brought, it must have looked rather odd.

I saw the same segment. Yea the tripple chain ring was a opotical illusion. What you were seeing was the roto ring hole’s. Gerard Vromen from Cervello IMO came off kinda weird. I like how he said I don’t need the quotations. Way to come off as a ass for your company. Then you could tell he was taking a pop shot at Specialized by saying “we dont make mountain bikes we don’t make tricycles we make the fastest bikes” LOL

He would be a good guest host for Mike Myers “Sprokets” NOW WE DANCE!

It looks fast, but clearly not performing at the tour. 42nd was the best Cervelo could get with Haussler, and I’m not so sure he was even on a P4

Even my non-techie wife noticed that immediately. “Hey, how come he’s using a regular bottle instead of that special one they were just showing off?” I couldn’t bring myself to bother with the whole UCI rant, though…

This seems obvious to me, but maybe it’s not. If I were in Cervelo’s shoes I’d feel pretty good about the last few years of amazing TT results they have amassed and the following that in part has generated. I would then say, hmm… I wonder how we can generate that kind of following with our road bikes? So instead of amassing a team of TT specialists I would look for riders that can win road race stages. People that could really put bikes like the S3 in front of viewers. And after a mere 7 months in this effort I would say that the results of Thor, Haussler, and Sastre (how many stages did he win at the Giro?) were working out pretty dang well. Maybe not perfect with Sastres tour performance (but there is always Saturday!), but it was still a decent bet at the beginning of the season.

It seems to me Cervelo is making a concerted effort to show off their road bikes. They’ve already “conquered” TT bikes. If they could get a similar road bike following they would truly be one of the greatest bike manufacturers of this era. Just think of the size of the road bike market in comparison to TT.

Seems obvious to me.

"42nd was the best Cervelo could get "

Of course it’s not about the bike but what’s so strange about ST is that it’s still all about the P4. No Trek love at all.

I would say the “conquering” is over on the TT front after the TDF placings this year, the P4 is alreading looking like old technology when you look at the Shiv, Trek, Scott, Giant. It is now more then ever, not about the bike as they say.
