I’m looking at getting a 16-17 cubic foot Thule or Yakima box - my main worry is that i want one that is SUPER easy to put on and off - i can’t stand screwing around (ooh, very punny) with nuts and bolts, and would also prefer that it be a one person job.
Yakima looks like they come with a nice ‘jaw’ style clamp (as do the ‘out of my price range’ Thule’s) that works almost like a bike quick release, but the thule looks more complicated than that.
Thule is dead easy too – or at least the Atlantis is. It attaches to the cross rails with jaws that adjust fore and aft, and tighten with the turn of a large knob. I’ve been very impressed.
I use a Yakima. I take it off and on about 20-30 times a year. I use broom handles to hang it from the ceiling of my garage, as follows. I slide the box forward while on the truck, insert the broom handles; lock the clamps; use the broom handles to manuever the box; flip the box over and hang from the ceiling of my garage by std. hooks. Reverse for putting on truck.
I also use the Yakima, in fact it’s on my car now. I find it very easy to put on. My box can be opened from either side and that works well for me. I have all of the locks on my bike rack and my box keyed the same.
