Was hanging out with some runner friends lately who said there was new research espousing the benefits of drinking sparking water. The last time I paid attention to whether or not my water was sparkling was the 1980s, when I thought carbonation was a BAD thing for endurance athletes. But apparently some new science turns that logic on its head–although I can’t find the research.
Also, heard an interview with Geraint Thomas recently where he mentioned drinking a ton of sparkling water.
I drink it every day in order to increase my total H2O intake. It certainly hasn’t appeared to make me any faster yet (see sig line but I like it better than the tap stuff, so I bought a Soda Stream and make my own.
GT might like it because carbonation fills you up so you eat less? Regardless I love carbonated water over still
For Pro Tour cyclists this is one of the ways they try to fill themselves up to cut those last 1-2 kilos. Hamilton talked about how Riis told him to come back from a long ride, drink a ton of soda water, take a sleeping pill, and try to go to bed w/o dinner.

This. We bought a soda stream 4-5 years ago and drink a ton more water then I used to. I have a bottle a day, more in the summer. The sparkling water also completely takes away my cravings for sugary soda. Win/win.
I can’t find the details, but from what I’ve read/heard it’s more to do with the dissolved salts in sparkling mineral waters that can be beneficial, and some more than others.
Better for hydration due to the electrolytes than tap water (fizzed up or not), which can just flush out the salts.
I love sparkling water too and helps stop me drinking sugary shite. The only thing I don’t like is it means loads of plastic bottles to recycle. Soda stream covers the plastics issue, but not the salts unless you added an electrolyte tab.

For what purpose? As hydration throughout the day, or during a workout?
I occasionally read French cycling and running magazines, and their nutrition articles always recommend drinking bubbly water after a workout. I don’t think there’s ever been an explanation, so it might be a cultural thing that has just caught on with cyclists because it’s conventional wisdom among French cyclists.
I do drink more water when it’s fizzy, so maybe the benefit is simple hydration, where you might not drink as much flat water. The “mineral waters” generally don’t contain a meaningful amount of electrolytes, though some do have trace elements that could provide a benefit. And if memory servers, the most mineral-rich Euro-waters are not carbonated.
Perhaps you’ve seen my video “Two Girls Do the Beer Mile (No Pants)” with KymNonStop. We have a rematch but this time it’s with water to see if it’s a hangover cure. This is still a hard drinking challenge because chugging that much soda water is rough. And train some good beer mile tips even though no beers were harmed in the filming of this video.
Yeah I don’t know. Seems to me that (particularly at high intensities) ventilation and plasma buffering capacity are already dealing with a high enough load of CO2. It’s counterintuitive that adding to that load would be beneficial.
