Carbon wheel with metal brake track

I could use some advice:

We are upgrading to new race wheels, planning to go with 60-80 mm rear, 30-40 mm front, carbon, but I’d like to have something with a non-carbon brake track so I can continue to use our previous training wheels without having to change brake pads out every time I want to switch. Not that it’s that hard but I really don’t need another thing to do on both bikes every couple of weeks. Suggestions on wheels that would fit this?

thanks,

HED Jets
Flo
Swissside
Mavic CXR 60 (clincher only)
.

H3 are always cool.

Bontrager Aura 5s should be in the mix too. They’re only slightly deeper on the front and slightly shallower on the back than what you mentioned above.

older zipp wheels and Sram S60/S80 wheels as well.

The mavic wheels use those exalith/swisstop green pads, which would have to be swapped in/out. Braking is really loud and screechy with the wrong pads on

oh yeah, that is true.
though, can you leave the exalith pads on fulltime?

I got my profile design’s exactly for that reason.

i have the Altair 80 set, and a 52 front as well for windy races.

I suppose I could - if I could tolerate the noise they make.
Got lazy last year and did a ride with exalith pads + training wheels, no problems stopping the bike (no crazy descents or rain or anything), but it sounded like nails on a chalkboard.
I just ride on the mavics full time now. FYI I’m using Cosmic SLE’s not CXRs, but I imagine the braking would be similar for both.

I’ve got the Ksyrium slr. My guess would be that using them on standard aluminum tracks might not be advised for the same reason you don’t want to use your carbon wheel pads interchangeably with your aluminum.

HED Jets. I bought the 60’s last year and they are insanely good.

Thanks a bunch for these suggestions. I’ll take a look at the options and prices!

I have all of those wheels that you mentioned with the exception of the Mavic CXRs. I would LOVE to have a set of CXR 60s, however, they are too pricey for me and it would be nice if the CXR specific tires had lower rolling resistance.

What say others about the HED Jets?

I own a pair of Jet+ wheels (the new 25mm version) 60 front disc rear. Awesome wheels with great braking. Prior wheelset was a 303FC front and 808FC rear. Even though the zipp’s braking was “pretty good” for carbon wheels it’s still night/day when you’re on aluminum.

I can understand going shallow up front but go as deep as you can in the rear. Jet 4/9 would be a pretty versatile combo and very tame in cross winds. Maybe wait a month or so until their “black” braking surface is ready to ship (almost identical to Mavic’s).

Is this a Exalith I vs Exalith II difference?

I run 90f 90r with a cover for tri/tt and 60f90r jets for road racing. best wheels I’ve ever used hands down. very good handling in crosswinds too.

What say others about the HED Jets?I only have one Hed Jet wheel, a ‘6’ front (Stallion). I also wanted metal brake tracks because they simply work better and it’s easier when you’re training with aluminum rims.

My Hed Jet has been awesome, have it 4 years now and it’s been rock solid. Not even the slightest bit out of true, and it’s nice and stiff without being too harsh. My rear is a Flo 90, which is also OK, but I think if I ever buy a disc it will be a Hed. The stiffness is simply better than the Flo.

My wheels are exalith II, I normally get the mavic pads whenever I can, but substituted the swisstop flash pro greens once with no problems.
The spare mavic pads I have sitting at home are green colored.
