Carbon Wheel Durability

The time has finally come to take back all of the empties and pony up for a set of deep rim “race” wheels, and I am being encouraged to go the whole 9 yards and get a powertap built in. My concern is that if I am going to get a power tap built in, then I really need to train with it , hence they are no longer “race” wheels, but will be forced to speed innumerable hours with me on the trainer in the basement all winter.

I searched the forum, but no thread seemed to directly address the durability issue…

I know that one option is a crank based power meter, but I am trying to shy away from that to allow me to swap the wheels between my road and TT bikes. I have also looked a cheaper rim with a PT and a wheelcover, but that seems fundamentally less attractive.

Can anyone offer an comfort/advice/counsel on the wear and tear on deep carbon rims for everyday and trainer use?

Am I better to just skip the PT and preserve the new wheels for racing?

Thanks

Steve

I had the same issue, and found a set of very gently used FP 60’s on Craigslist, and a PT (wired) on E-Bay in the same condition. I had the rear rebuilt with the PT. I use them for racing and training, albeit with a cover for racing. Did the whole thing for less than $1,200, and couldn’t be happier.
