Carbon vs. Aluminum?

I’m 6’2" and 195lbs and looking at a carbon fiber road bike - specifically Cervelo R2.5. Have had about 6 aluminum bikes over the past five years and have been wondering about the rigidity of carbon. I know the technology has come a long way, but not sure if this is something I should consider or not for an upcoming bike purchase. Not sure if these bikes are stiff in the BB? Have had aluminum bikes that I’ve had to get rid of because of slop in BB - so is a concern for me.

Any suggestions or comments if you have ridden the R2.5 are greatly appreciated. Gerard is out of the office right now, so I thought I would ask you ST folks.

Check smartasscoach’s favorite bike right now: Scott CR-1. No, don’t ride one, not sponsored like them, it’s just a kick ass bike!

Also take a look at the Kestrel Talon SL. I race on a P3 and train on the Talon SL. It is plenty stiff…

Carbon’s a good way to go but, at your size, I’d stay away from a carbon steerer tube fork. Not sure what the 2.5 has. I, too, have heard good things about the Scott, and although it’s not as sexy, the ol’ Trek 5900 was quite stout underneath me when I was pushing 220 lbs. and is a good buy to boot.

Really it needs to be about fit. Don’t get focused on a name before determining which frame best suits your needs and fits your physique.
