Just bought a tub of Carbo-Pro and it tastes an awful lot like and seems to have the same caloric content of the bag of maltodextrin I bought at a health food store for way less $$. Any nutritionists or scientists out there who know what the difference is between the two? Why use Carbo-Pro over plain maltodextrin?
Funny…considering the label says it has no taste. I’ve been using it for a few weeks…the only taste I’ve noticed is whatever the flavor is of the drink I put it in.
I’ve used carbo-pro for quite some time. Never noted any taste but the flavor of the gatoraid it’s mixed with.
same here. no taste when only mixed with water. very sticky though. it does a good job of keeping bottles in their cages.

Try about a half a scoop of Cytomax or some other flavored drink. You can mix up about 600 calories in a bottle if needed with no problems.
When I say “taste”, I mean a very subtle sweetness thatis different from plain water. I haven’t tried mixing it with anything but water so far. My experimenting continues.
Interesting, so your point being, you can buy maltodextrin at a much lower price…does straight maltodextrin mix well with liquids (e.g., gatorade)
.
Scott,
You may want to read this thread from a couple months ago which address this specific question:

Hope this helps clear things up.
Brian,
Great info in the old thread. You didn’t answer seattlesteve’s question though. Does mixing Carbo-Pro with something else affect the digestibility? I was mixing mine with Amino Vital and now have switched to Clif Shot Electrolyte Replacement.
Thanks.
You can purchase a 50 lbs bag of maltodextrin from GPC: http://www.grainprocessing.com/index.htm
I split it with three friends when trianing for IMFL and still threw out half when we were done. With shipping it came out to about $90. One measured cup equaled about 100 calories, we were taking our bottles up to 600 calories each (1/2 gatorade and half maltrin.) This was the only way we could comfortably take in the calories we needed during the bike. It does give a sweet taste with water, but takes on whatever you mix it with.
