Carbo-Pro vs maltodextrin

Is maltodextrin roughly the same stuff as Carbo-Pro? Malto is way easier for me to get my hands on than Carbo-Pro. I was looking at using it instead of Carbo-Pro in the “Iron Cocktail” that Brian Shea markets at Personal Best Nutrition.

Scott,

It’s the same, but different :o) A Huffy and a Litespeed are both bikes, but few would believe they are the same thing and your question falls into the same category. You may want to read this thread from a couple months ago which addresses this specific question:

Let me know if there’s any other questions.

Where do you get your maltodextrin? Carbo-Pro makes me sick and upsets my stomach, but maltodextrin does not.

i bought mine at a local health food store but I have heard of people getting it at brew-your-own places since it is used in home beer brewing. After reading Brian Shea’s thoughts, i would think that if Carbo-Pro makes you sick, malto will not be any better. It is cheap so no harm in trying.

In your other post, you mention that carbo-pro has a patented polymerization process. What’s the Patent No.?

You can get maltodextrin fairly cheaply online at the Protein Factory. I think it is www.proteinfactory.com

I used this stuff last year for IMFL and training. I mix it one for one with Accelerade in a super concentrated form (about 800 cals/bottle). I drink about 1/2 a bottle per hour and supplement with plain water to keep my hydration up.

I tried carbo pro for two seasons and I find it to be too sweet, and I get a sugar rush from it. If I drink enough of it I also get the big time poops from too much carbo. Malto never did that to me. So far this season I have not been training with anything but I will change that this weekend.

I got mine from the JM Swank Co. 1-800-JMSWANK

I went with the m500 as recommended by Dr. Arnie Baker. $60 for a 50lb sack shipped to my door.

I thought Carbo-Pro was tasteless. Does it come in flavored too?

It is tasteless, in a very sucroce kind of way. Kind of like drinking sugar water or similar.

I’ve never tried it just plain. For the most part it is very low “sweetness”. Kinda like adding sugar to water. But simialr amounts, calorie wise, of plain old sugar will be much sweeter tasting than Carbo Pro.

I find using it with another sports drink product only slightly increases the sweetness. On the other hand making a “super calorie” mix does increase the “thickness”.
