Car purchase sales tax

I purchased a used car this week from a dealer(in my home state). Three days later I get a voicemail saying “we forgot to add sales tax”. I have not looked at all the paperwork to confirm this yet but am wondering if anyone has had this exerpience.

Is the expectation now that I pay this tax money immediately to the dealer? Can I wait til tax time and pay then?

I am waiting to call the dealer until I get more information.

I feel like I signed all the paperwork, gave them all day to work on it, it should have been done correctly, they should just eat it, not me!!

Tell them to eat it…

I agree. Some dealerships use sales tax as an incentive, so your situation probably happens quite a bit. Did you get an extended warranty? If so, I’d pay the tax. If not, I wouldn’t.

Tell them to eat it…

100% agree.

tell them tough shit, dispute the charges etc, thats something they should have done initially. Not your fault.

I had to pay extra for the warranty (to have the car GM certified – even though it was on their lot).

I agree, tell them to eat it. Had a similar thing happen to me about 20 years ago when I could barely rub two nickles together. I held my ground and told them the deal is the deal. Trust me, if the dealer accidently charged you state sales tax twice, he wouldn’t refund the difference.

These guys are pros, if the screw up a deal, there’s no “do over” (as long as the buyer doesn’t do anything to allow it to happen).

Of course the sales tax is part of registration for the vehicle in this state. If you dont have the sales tax paid you dont get the car registered.
