Car Problem - Clutch

I’m not very good with cars. Other than driving, checking the fluids, tire pressure, etc. I do not know much about cars.

I have a 1994 Isuzu Rodeo and the clutch doesn’t seem to work anymore. Before I get screwed over by some garage I don’t trust I thought I’d ask some people on slowtwitch.

The clutch is really loose and I basically have to pull it back with my foot. Well, that used to be until I rolled into work this morning. No lunch because I couldn’t drive anywhere. I press the clutch but the car remains in gear.

What does that mean? Is the clutch toast? Do I have to replace the clutch? How much? Any info appreciated.

thank you so much!!!

Trade it in for a P3C.

already have a P3…and I seriously doubt that my beat up car is worth much. I wouldn’t mind driving it around for a little longer though because I don’t want to spend money on another car. I don’t drive much so the gas prices don’t affect me much. Would like to get a Mini Cooper next but I wait until I can get a used one for under 10k.

Probably a hydraulic clutch , seal - line - broken or leaking , check the level of the smallest reservoir near the firewall or near the pedal ( should say clutch on cap ).

If the clutch is mechanical ( most likely not )- out of adjustment - broken cable / lever , return spring ,older Honda’s are bad for this.

Your clutch could be fine , just the bearing , lever , that disengages it is bad.

When it slips / smells / smokes / shakes / THEN your screwed ,

If it climbs a grade in gear its not the clutch .

I’d have to agree. Mechanical clutches are rare these days. I thought they went out with British Leyland.

No smell, no smoke, no shake.

What do you mean with the clutch “sliping”? The clutch had absolutely no resistance and then didn’t return. Please tell me that this is not considered a “slip”.

edit. THANK YOU

When the pressure plate ( engine side ) and the clutch plate ( transmission side) Slip. The engine will rev. in gear , without the car moving in relation to the engine RPM.

Basically if you could burn rubber / smoke the tires Before the last problem, the clutch is good.

There is a hydraulic cylinder that presses the plates apart /away from the clutch disc. If that cylinder is shot it could cost a few bucks , but not like a clutch job.

Most people replace it all ,as its a pain to get to . But if you nickle and dime it you might keep it running on junk yard parts.

Some junk yards do car repair , a good prices ?

See if you have fluid in the clutch system ? , It maybe a $2 spring or $10 fitting or line. Normally the clutch will die slowly over 40 -125K miles , a hyd. clutch can die very quickly .

The quickest fix would be the pedal / master clutch cylinder on the floor , like I said add fluid if its dry ,at least to find the leak / seal / line failure.

See if you have fluid in the clutch system ?
