Looking for what car or suv I should buy that would fit my bike. I want the bike inside the car. I can take the front wheel off to have it fit but must keep the back wheel on. Also can’t fold down the second row of seats as I need my two kids to seat there in there car seats. I figured I would ask here before I went to the dealerships with my bike and try to jam it into every car/suv I think it might fit in. thanks
How’s about skipping the hulking SUV and going for the more fuel efficient car…I have a subaru, which fits plenty of gear. I love it.
Not trying to start the great suv v. car battle which I’ve seen before, but flame away…
That would be fine. But would the subaru be able to handle the bike in the car and the second row seats for kids at the same time? If so tell me what model. I would consider anything but the minivans.
I think you should get an A-Team kind of van…
hell yeah!!! then he could change his name to Big Head Mr. T… and his quote would be “I pity da foo”
Why does the bike HAVE to be in the vehicle? It’s not perfect, but I have carried a bike on a roof rack for years and never had a problem. This frees up the whole car to be used for storage/seating. Just an idea.

I have to take the bike to work in order to ride on the group weeknight rides. It would not fit into the parking garage. Plus I am not sure if I got a rear rack that people would not mess with it. You just never know. That is why I need it to fit inside the car.
BTW smartass my 5 year is already as tall as you!!
i have a 04 jeep grand cherokee limited. works just how you want and you never have to worry about some a hole running in to the back and messing up your bike.
It gets horrible gas milage though aprox 15 mpg and each fill up is $50 x 2 times per week.
we need more hybrids on the market
I don’t understand the aversion to mini vans. They are the ideal family/bike vehicle. They easily carry 4 people and have a huge cargo area for gear and two bikes fully assembled. The new fold down seats are great. They are more economical than an SUV and more practical than a car.
I’ve had driven them since the 80’s, mostly Dodge/Chryslers. I guess I pick a vehicle by it’s usefulness in my lifestyle, not it’s “image”.

I have a VW passat wagon. With the wheels off, a bike will fit in the back if it’s not too big. I carry my bike on the roof most of the time though. It does decent gas mileage, 30 mpg average with about half in the city half on the highway. I bought it because it has a lot of leg room for me and I’m 6’7" .
acura mdx—they have an internal bike rack that you can get as option that makes bike storage very efficient
.
Why not remove both wheels and put your bike in a nice secure trunk? My trunk is my sports locker.
I bought a Chrysler Concorde last fall. Bike fits in the trunk, plenty of room for four inside, and ok gas mileage.

Count yourself in a small minority of drivers then. Based on the numbers of SUV’s and trucks on the road, that do none of what they are actually designed to do, cost way more to run per kilometre than other vehicles and have been proven to be actually more unsafe to drive in than the “safe” illusion that they have created. I heard a marketing analyst say recently that the whole SUV/Truck thing has been the biggest marketing rouse that has ever been pulled on the US consumer population. If people want to be part of that rouse/game, then so be it!
I agree, I am not sure what the aversion is to the Mini-Van. For the triathlete with a family, my guess is that it’s the perfect vehicle. However, we live in a free and open market society( thank goodness) and people are free and open to make whatever decsion about this that they want. .

I was going to say the same thing. My wife drove a minivan until we got a trailer it wouldn’t tow and I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I had three front-wheel bike mounts on a 2X6 that I could lay just behind the 2nd row seats. One bike would fit in the middle mount and stay upright. Two bikes would fit on the outside mounts.
Now she drives a suburban and spending nearly a hundred bucks to fill up really stinks.
Just go for the ultimate box on wheels that you can hose out if it gets dirty…Honda Element.

What’s with all the women driving the really big and/or really expensive SUV’s? Anecdotally I see more women driving these things than men. I guess all of these women live 50 K down a, rocky, rutted, boulder strewn un-serviced road that passes over three mountain passes and does not get plowed out in the winter!

Size matters. Ask any woman.
So you want the bike in the car PLUS the kids in the back seat? How about a Cooper Mini with a roof rack - I recommend Thule.
