Canyon Speedmax CF Stop ride notice

This all depends. Either it’s “scary,” or they are being proactive after finding one or two bikes with issues that other manufacturers would’ve just ignored.

They are not really proactive. As I said above, mine broke in 2021 and there were already various posts on Reddit with the same situation. And if you just take a look at comments sections on various tri outlets these days, you’ll see it’s not an isolated case.

I even remember discussing with the Canyon warranty team that this issue was really dangerous and that I had read online some more people happening to them. They said back in 2021 they didn’t know anything about it.

Why recalling now then? Maybe some other buyer pushed them to do it. I just hope that buyer had as much luck as I had and didn’t crash badly

I don´t know much about the potential legal issues for Canyon on this. But could it be, that a reason why they send out this message, is to counter for any lawsuits, etc, in case somebody goes down?

Looking back on 7 years of riding is scary in that context. Emotional.

Interesting Canyon has two stop orders all of a sudden.

I would be curious to know when canyon realized internally that this was an issue. The timing of the new cockpit and the stop ride might just be a coincidence. #dieselgate

I have some friends who had the same issue back then around '20-'21… and they were replaced w/o “any problems/questions”.

Perhaps a rider decided to lawyer up

I was curious what my steerer would look like. Here’s a peak. There is a noticable ring around the fork, and a small section around 1cm in width has a noticable crack through the clear coat. Inside of the steerer appears fine, but no telling how many more pot holes this would have survived. I’ve only managed 3k kilometers on more or less impecable German roads.

I just received the email with next steps for the repair. We are supposed to have a repair kit mailed to us and find a local bike mechanic to inspect and repair as needed. They will reimburse us 100 Euro for our troubles.

They want bank account info sent for reimbursement and I have to admit that I am a bit leery of giving my banking information. They don’t appear to be offering e-transfer as an option. Their first choice seems to be having us provide an IBAN account, but I am in Canada and don’t have this.

We’ll have to see how the process goes. Yes, I’m thankful that it’s being fixed, but, like the other posters, am wondering if this shouldn’t have been acknowledged sooner.

Has anybody got the repairs done yet?

Velofix (the travelling repair shop) are the only approved partner on the list anywhere near me and I reached out to them, but they said they are not participating. The nearest to me now would be a half day round trip or so in order to be able to have it repaired, so I am less than happy. I have reached out to Canyon to see if they have any alternative solutions

Our local Canyon service center has been exceptional. We contacted them saying we’re going to 70.3 worlds. They pushed hard to get the fix (some aluminum sleeve according to their message) and replaced steerer cap on time. In addition to that, when inspecting the bike, the saw some scuff marks on the handlebars, so they replaced them free of charge, including new handlebar tape and what I assume a brake bleed.

Doesn’t the information just say it need to be done by a “professional mechanic?” Says nothing about Canyon authorized and very clear instructions are provided (pdf and video). Anyone who has seen a bicycle before should be able to do it woth those instructions. The €100 they provide should also be enough to go to any shop to cover the cost.

Are you in the USA? Possibly they are giving different people different instructions - I’m in the USA and haven’t seen anything about a dollar reimbursement amount

The latest email explains they are sending out the ‘repair kits’ to service partners. The online FAQ on the topic says that it needs to be an official service partner and doesn’t give a video or instructions at all - where did you get that from please?

Cheers

I’m in Germany and the instructions were to go to a service partner. I hope there will be compensation as it’s going to require me to take time off of work and to rent a van to transport the bike. Thankfully both my Canyons have a recall and I can get them both done at the same time.

My fork is visibly defective, so I’m curious what will get replaced. The stem has a really sharp edge so I don’t know how a sleeve is supposed to remedy the situation.

I got the stop ride email, waited until December, didn’t get a follow up email when friends did and had to message their chat twice to find out that my more recent cf is fine as it has a different stem to the affected models but it doesn’t seem they were going to tell me that!
Might be worth a quick message if anyone hasn’t had an email.

They said that in the original notice:
“Supporting you in your ambition to performance and at the same time maintaining your safety is crucial for us. That’s why we are contacting you to share information about an important safety issue on your Speedmax CF bike with a V21 Aerostem. From our records you have purchased this product from us."

The one piece bar-stem is not part of the recall. The V21 alloy stem equipped bikes are.

Any update on this? I won’t have to rent a van, but it will require me either be taking time off work, or a whole weekend for the 500 mile / 9 hour round trip for me.

Hoping, but know it’s incredibly unlikely, they just drop a new fork and stem in the mail.

It sounds like it’s possible to take it to your lbs, they were supposed to email more info but haven’t yet.

I’m getting anxious, not being able to ride it!

Message canyon and check, if you haven’t had an email you might be ok, I was.
