Canned interview questions

I am really enjoying all the new content on ST lately, especially interesting to me are all of the interviews with the top caliber athletes.

That said, I am finding the “canned” approach getting a bit tiresome. Do any agree? Is this the best use of the athlete’s time and the best service to the readership. ST is the best tri site in existence and rapidly distancing itself for any competitors. Shouldn’t we have the best, most poignant interviews out there?

Specifically, maybe instead of favorite foods and books you read, you could throw in a whammy like,
“Allright Cam you are among the best Ironman athletes today, however your inability to win at Kona begs the question, do you truly intend and desire to win or are you actually content with the top 5?”

That may be an extreme example and I have the utmost respect for his accomplishments so don’t read into it please. Only an example. What I’m getting at is, the tough questions, the hard questios…they are out there. Should we/can we ask them?

Maybe just ask Cam about his running abilities and how he trains to be a runner and what maybe is the minimal biking he does to still remain competitive there, and how this all ties into his overall Ironman strategy.

Ask these athletes about the tough times, the low points, the failed workouts, the desire to quit…etc We know they are awesome, show me they’re human, like me, as well.

Agreed, the canned question format is getting a bit tiresome. The amount of interviews does make up for the shortcomings of the format. Maybe a couple of follow up questions to the current, “what does your typical mid season training week look like?” such as what are you favorite workouts r/b/s? or What is your favorite after workout recovery snack/meal?

Just my .02

Agreed, good points…I was just thinking the same.

Maybe when Herbert has an interview lined up, he can put it to the forum beforehand so we can come up with some more specific Qs for that athlete?

Yep, I’ve been thinking the exact same thing. I’m sure Herbert is reading this thread. I like the interviews, but I’m tired of reading the same old replies to “Do you consider yourself disciplined in terms of training and nutrition?”

I hear you loud and clear and while some questions are tough to change, others certainly can. My thought was here actually to have a “basic profile” of these athletes and then as we follow up with interviews with them during the season we have more specific, tougher questions.
