Cancellara's equipment choice

…not about the bike, but interesting about his choice of bars, stem and cranks

I think it’s more interesting that he’s running a set of 808’s. An 85mm front would have been unthinkable for a road stage until recently.

That really does surprise me. I don’t know why. It makes perfect sense. I wonder if any other riders are using 808s on road stages. Maybe on today’s flat stage, Fabian will put a disk on the back.

.

I found it interesting that he’s 6’3" and rides a 54cm P3C and a 58cm SLC-SL (according the Cervelo eNews)…

Did you watch Milan-SanRemo? I almost fell out of my chair when I saw 808’s on Schleck’s ride.

That is odd. I vaguely recall Mr. Vrooman saying that riders would ussually be on the same size TT and road rigs. Maybe it was in Cervelo’s Tech area (which I regularly read for some inexplicable reason).

Clerly Cancellara knows something we don’t, though.

hunh. he uses the same cranks i had stock on my soloist, but recently replaced.
i guess once i get faster i’ll put them back on.

It also suprised me that he would use the gossamer cranks which are not considered to be high end gear.

If they’re good enough for him, they are certainly adequate for me, I would venture…

Francois in Montreal

According to this cycling news link with all the details of his SLC-SL, his top tube is 565mm which would mean he’s riding a size 56…not 58.

i am not sure what i am missing: what is unusual about his bars or stem ?

Not the highest end/highest tech or golly gee whiz coolness factor. After all the bars are “only” aluminium.

Wow, he is exactly my size, rides a Cervelo just like I do, and is on too small of a frame just like I am…

No wonder I’m pretty fast even though I’ve only been doing this a year!

=)

Not so strange. I am 6’2"+ and I ride a 58cm Cervelo road bike. Fits me fine.

In a carbon obsessed bike culture, I guess it seems odd to some/many that good old aluminum parts and accessories will work just fine and in some instances may even be “better”!

When the road is flat, weight is nearly irrelevant

He may want to carbon that thing up tomorrow though!

the 58cm road is not what surprises me (i’m 6’3" and ride 58cm R3). it’s the 54cm TT frame. would have thought maybe 56cm. if he’s 6’3" and riding 54cm, who rides a 61cm?

and i saw the geometry from cyclingnews, which did look like a 56cm frame. i got the 58cm stat from this mornings Cervelo eNews email. you’d think they’d know…

"Fabian’s SLC-SL was fitted with: Cervélo SLC-SL frame, 58cm Alpha-Q GS-10 fork Cervélo 1-position aero carbon seatpost Zipp 606 wheels Vittoria Corsa Evo CX tubulars FSA Gossamer MegaExo crankset (same as used on the Ultegra-equiped Cervélos) FSA bar & stem Selle Italia Flite saddle Speedplay Zero – limited edition Yellow "

A lot of pro roadies use Aluminum bars because if you get into a small pileup, the mechanics don’t have to unwrap the bars and check for cracks in the carbon fiber. The weight savings are negligible and it’s just a little less maintenance to worry about in the event of a crash. Not sure about stiffness, but with OS bars, you’d really have to be a beast to complain about flex in the bars.

The weight savings are negligible
not even sure there is any wt. savings with carbon road bars, given that 3ttt used to sell a 26.0 alloy bar that ran at 200 grams and retailed for $75, and could accept clip-ons. find me a carbon bar that meets any of those spec’s …

I am 6’3" and ride a 56cm P2Sl…it works, but just barely…aero bars are ALL the way adjusted outward, and my knees are real close to the top of the steering tube…

So I don’t know how he would fit on a 54

He may have a shorter torso and since he needs to ride with the seat post “reversed” to be in UCI compliance, he needs a size 54 for the correct top tube length. Without taking the time to look through pictures of him on his TT set-up, I seem to recall that he likes a compact position.
