100mile club ride on sunday…sat night, getting ready.
1 - go to put bikes in car, Cervelo has a flat, brand new tube from box…not togther at the seam. Next tube I pinch on the rim…third tube…got it done.
2 - cant fit the bike in my car the same way I used to cause of the aero bars…took 30 minutes to get it in and not make a mess of the car.
3 - cant sleep at all
4 - get up with buddy ringing door bell…get dressed and ready to head out - notice that Tracys Sidi shoe ratchet is on the floor, not the shoe - broken (what a crappy design).
5 - take Tracys bike out of the car cause she cant ride, repack all my wheels.
6 - head out…with a bad feeling…to many things going wrong…about 10 miles from home I decide to cancel and headed back home…screw it.
oddly enough when I took the bike out of the car I noticed that all along I had the wrong shoes in my car, I have 5 pair of Time shoes…only one pair wiht the RSX cleat, and that was not what was in the car - turns out I would not have been able to ride even if I got to the start of the ride…
good call. The day I was run over started out very much like yours and I felt strange and kinda nervous the whole time. Maybe nothing would have happened to you, but it’s always good to listen to your gut.
I have the “three strike” rule. Three things I don’t like and I find something else to do. Last time I forced it I did a free ascent (no air-broken HP line) for 80 ft.
Funny, about five years later I was taking a root cause analysis class and they have a “rule of three” that discussed three levels of “caused by” which, if acted on, the accident wouldn’t have happened.
I was suppossed to do an epic weekend last weekend - a 100-mile ride last Saturday followed by long rides on Sunday and Monday. I got 2 flats at once at mile 30 of the Saturday ride. After lots of walking, I packed the bike back up and went home, but had a stellar workout the next day (on new tires)
less dramatic than you, but I packed up and left for our weekly crit practice last Tuesday. I had the sneaking suspicion that I might have forgotten something, since I really didn’t put much in the car. I got to the empty lot where we practice. I took my bike off the rack, put the front wheel on, and reached for my shoes … I’d forgotten my shoes. I cursed, decided that I was feeling a little run down anyway, and left. just as I’m coming up to my apartment’s parking lot, I realize that I also forgot my helmet.
if you have to forget more than one item, probably best if it all happens together.
Yep, that was me yesterday. I fumbled with my bike a lot on Saturday night cleaning it and changing out my race tires for training tires. I can’t find my bike pump and then realize where I left it and it probably isn’t there anymore (it wasn’t). I get up the next day and it takes me forever to get going. I pump up my tires, drive out to ride, and my rear tube is blown. I pack it up and head back home. It wasn’t meant to be.
