Canadian tri calendar

I need to find a calendar for next year’s events (predominantly in BC), I thought triBC would have it up by now but the races on there are few and far between with significant ommissions. Can anyone direct me to a better site?

I have the XTC race dates and am looking for 1/2s, olys and any other off road tris in the middle third of the year.

Thanks, Guys.

Julian,
You are right, the tribc calendar is more than a little sparse this time of year. If you want specific info on some of the races, better to check out:

www.outbackevents.ca (Oliver 1/2 in June, desert 1/2 in July)
www.rmevents.com (Prestige 1/2 in June, Wasa Oly in June)

Victoria 1/2 is also in June but I can’t recall the website for that one. The other bigger Oly’s are on the tribc site already.

Hope that helps,

robert

Info on the Victoria 1/2 IM in June is at the link below. One of the best 1/2 IM races around. Norm Thibault is the RD and Steve King does the race announcing. What’s not to like!

Thanks, Guys. That’s the ticket. Now if I could remember which one isn’t the flat one of Oliver and Victoria I could get in on that! Steve, which is the lumpiest bike course?

Oliver is more of a rhythm course whereas victoria is a lot of turns and one steep uphill with rollers
.

I can tell you right now, with absolute authority that **OLIVER IS NOT FLAT!!! ** Neither is Victoria, mind you - but Oliver was the course Simon told me was flat. The “lumpiest” bike course would probably be Joe Dixon’s Desert Half. Same RD as Oliver and IMC, and I’m told its an awesome race. It goes over Richter backwards, among other things. Oliver has been sold out for an age, and Victoria won’t open up until early Spring (mail-in). The Desert Half is still wide open though…

I thought that Oliver was full already. I am heading there next year instead of Norm’s race only because I can hit some great wineries and have not done that race before. I do however like Norm’s race as it is a great course, good run and the parental units live there and it is free to stay.

Hey bro - BC Athletics is probably your best bet. MultiSportCanada also lists their own stuff, as does EventsOnline.

Are you planning on being in BC for the full season?

Ah, the Vancouver massive awakes ;-).

Linda told me that one of them would be better for me as it was a climbing course (and I believe she described Oliver as the flat sections of IMC!). I will check those two sites. I would love to be in BC for the full season but immigration and my CCs would not be that accomodating I think!

Work will change it’s policy on leave next year and we will only be able to bid for two fortnight’s of leave between 1st May and 1st October! Hence me having to look again at the calendar. I had hoped to perm two/three from Xterra Marbella or Sardinia, Alcatraz or Alpe d’huez and XTC Campbell River or Buntzen all of which fall in the same window. Now that I have to pay for accom during my time in Vancouver a three week stay would be prohibitive.

Damn dude, that sucks! You need a new job… ;-p

Oliver is indeed “the flat part” of IMC. I highly recommend doing it fixed. A 42x15 ought to do the trick.

I wouldn’t call Victoria “a climbing course”. It’s “rolly”, but there are no real climbs per se. The Desert Half would be a good climbing course for you. Easier to lock up your spot, too (you can register online now, rather than playing the mail and hope game w/ Victoria). Don’t get me wrong - I love Victoria. But if you’re planning way out in advance, it’s a tough race to bet on.

Julian,

It’s the run at Victoria that is the real treat - two 10K laps of the beautiful park trail that skirts around the perimeter of Elk Lake. It’s tree lined, shaded and for the most part flat most of the way. Gorgeous!

Julien and Khai, I have been working with Charlie changing up the Prestige Half (www.rmevents.com). The course is going to to fricken rock. The bike will be very challenging (not Richter Pass, but not flat at all) and the run is going to be something special we’ve been working on.

If you come, you won’t be dissapointed, it is a great event.

i recommend victoria half… it s HARD bike course…if you want to ride it well and fast,…you have to suffer a lot and there is tons of hills!!!

and it s next to where i live so it s cool… everyone is welcome to my place!

I agree - that run course is a jewel. Nothing like Joe’s hated Oliver run! ;-p

Looks like a great event - but why go (almost) head-to-head with Victoria, and so soon after Oliver? I’d think that
late July would be optimal timing as an excellent pre-IMC tune-up event.

The crappy thing with the date as it was the last three years was that most IM’ers thought it was to close to IMC. It wasn’t, but I think for the majority of first timers, it was a little daunting. Also, he was trying to get out of Sylvan Half’s way, since they seemed to be gaining momentum. Theory of putting it right when it is is that GWN is already sold out. Oliver is sold out. Victoria will sell out FAST. This will be an alternative race for those wanting to do a half during that time. Most first IM’ers (doing IMC) feel this is the time to do their only half for some weird reason.

Anyway, that’s the theory, we’ll see if it works. The venue should and the amazing race organization should speak for itself after people try it.

Fair enough - the logic is certainly sound. I’m already registered for Oliver and would race Victoria too, if I thought my legs could handle it. Otherwise I had toyed with possibly doing the Desert Half. This one is kind of in between for me (1 week more to recover than Victoria offers, but 2 less than the Desert). I guess I’ll have to play this one by ear and see how it goes. At my current level of fitness and training, Oliver will be another deathmarch and I’ll need 2 months to recover! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Umm, how about 600 people on a mulitple 35min bike loop, that’s not what to like , can you say drafting.

I would recommend the Desert Half, major climbs really break things up, awesome course.

Hey Jonnyo, if we all come to your place do you supply the womens?

How far is Elk Lake from the Ferry?

Elk Lake is about a 15 minute drive south of the ferry docks in Sidney. Can’t remember the turn off road from the Hwy., but you can see the lake from the Hwy.
