Canadian provincial triathlon insurance question

For the RD’s, or board members of the provincial triathlon associations… or anyone else who might know…

What is the deal with racing out of province and using your triathlon association membership?

I am an Alberta (ATA) member and seem to race in BC with no problem… but I recently heard of an AB race director not honouring SK athletes (STAC) insurance numbers…

Is it required that all provinces honour each other’s members?
Is it up to the RD?

You don’t need insurance. HTFU!

I’m actually considering starting a grass roots tri series.

No t-shirts, no swag bags, no bike racks, no insurance. Carry all your own nutrition. Two pylons for the finish line.
Everyone throws in $5, 1/2 the pot as a prize purse split among top men/women, 1/2 to a random participant!
Timing done with my Timex watch, a piece of paper and clipboard.
BYOB and BBQ afterwards!

And most of all NO FUCKING WHINING!

This is my understanding, as a club executiive type (and I may be wrong about some of it): In Ontario, we buy our license (insurance) through OAT. The insurance that covers us is just a policy provided by a normal insurance company, and it covers events in Ontario as long as they are sanctioned by OAT. The master policy will have a list of OAT sanctioned events each year that are covered. As a club, we also submit a comprehensive booklet in the spring each year that outlines all of our activities, locations, and even bike routes that are to be covered during club events. If we hold a training event at a location not previously listed, then we are not covered. That’s Ontario.

I would guess that perhaps BC and Alberta either use the same insurance carrier, or that maybe there is a policy in place that covers those two provinces, since (like other sports in the west) the circuit seems to cover both provinces. Geographically, BC and Alberta work together to run sports series quite often. Perhaps this is the case in tri out there as well.

Thanks. That makes a lot of sense.

It would be great if we could get nationwide insurance though…
If I can pay $15/year through my credit card to get 30 day worldwide travel insurance, then surely we can do the same with triathlon?

Then again… if Triathlon Canada took over insurance nationwide… who would bother to join their provincial federation… hmmm…
