Can you injure your knee swimming?

About 400 yds into my swim workout this am my knee began to hurt. I have never had this kind of pain before - left knee, next to the lower inside section of the cap. Hurts to walk - quite painful. My season opens next Sat with a race the following week also so i am hoping this is a short term freaky occurance that will make itself scarce quickly.

Any thoughts what it could be?

Yes you can.

If you can quickly access a reputable sports physical therapist- do it now. In the mean time, do not test it and Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation and maybe some non-steroidal anti-inflamatories.

Good luck, keep us posted.

Ditto, have it checked out. I developed bursitis after a marathon last year, and was told by some fishes that it’s quite common for breast strokers to get it also. It was a hard one to get over, but if I had tried to “run through it” I’m sure I’d still be in pain.

Good luck, I hope it heals soon whatever it is…

greenjt,

I can only second the advice of others before me. Get thee to an orthopedist pronto. Better safe than sorry. And finally, yes, you can injury your knee while swimming. My brother required orthtroscopic surgery after he injured his knee while swimming.

I stopped swimming breastroke because I had knee pain last year. Given that my pain came from over-pronation and some muscles being stronger/weaker than others, breastroke seemed to strengthen the already strong muscles and continiue the pain.
