Can you help with wireless router?

I have had a basic Linksys wireless G router for about 5 years. It has worked great so no need to update. My issue is this- I got a new PC and the router still has the old PC’s MAC address in it. The router indicates that it has an internet connection but no devices are able to connect wirelessly. I am tech unsavy and I am just regurgitating what someone told me is wrong. How can I change it to the new PC’s MAC address? You help is greatly appreciated. THANKS!

.

Connect the PC to the router using a network cable. Enter the router’s admin page and go to the advanced wireless settings. Add the mac address for the new PC to the access control list. When you save it will reboot the router. Disconnect the network cable and try to connect wireless.

Thank you both for your reply but I am having trouble just getting off the ground. How do I open the admin section of my router? Do I have to reset my modem or anything like that? When I open a new browser and enter the 192.168.1.1 I get the equivalent of a bing search. Not sure what to do but a little more help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

you are on the right track. The admin page should be 192.168.1.1 unless you changed that

Do you have to reset your modem? Possibly. If you have the same modem you’ve been using than your provider should be able to communicate to it. Was that modem previously connected to the router or was it conencted to a particular pc. If a pc or different router, then yes you usually have to power the modem off and back on for it to realize it is now connected to a new router device.

Regarding the admin page on the router,
did you connect your pc with an ethernet cable to the back of the router? You have to be wired until you get the wireless working. Mine has 5 connections. One to hook to the modem and 4 that you could hook a pc to.

LInksys normally has a login of admin with password admin unless you changed the admin password.
if you did you may have to press a factory reset button that would reset all settings to factory settings. which would let you in again

you may want to google the exact model for an on-line manual of your router to confirm the initial admin password.

Your problem likely doesn’t have anything to do with MAC addresses.

Your router is in DHCP mode, which means any new device will be assigned an IP address–that you switched PC’s doesn’t change this fact.

If you can’t connect over wifi, check your wifi adapter settings under networking, it should be set to acquire IP addresses and DNS automatically.

Also check your security settings, as you may not have your settings matching the router, even if you have put in the proper key.

And as others have stated, connect directly to the router, and see if you can connect.

192.168.1.1 will get you to the admin page, if you can’t access it after directly connecting to the router, you will have to asign a temporary IP address to your PC.

Nice, thanks for handing out my passwords and user names.

You did put the http:// in front of the 192.168.1.1 didn’t you?

Is the router between you and your ISP? Does your ISP deliver your IP addresses via DHCP or so you have a static address? I have seen a problem where the ISP “locks” the MAC address and then needs to be cleared. It’s a 5 minute conversation between you and support if that is the case.

It is not necessary.

Wait a minute, if you are on your own network, and trying to reach 192.168.1.1 and Bing search comes up, where is the internet connection problem.

And if you are trying to reach 192.168.1.1 and you are not on your own network, then you should call Geek Sqaud.
