I’m assuming that at a NAS (or should I say, “Ironmancenter”? Much more official…) event that somewhere in the rules it says you can’t pee except in designated areas (butt huts). But my real question is will course marshalls flag you if they see you off the side of the road whipping it out and peeing?
I ask because I am incapable of pissing myself on the bike while moving - I just can’t get it flowing.
I’ve never heard of someone being penislized but I stopped to pee in front of one of the cops directing traffic at Lake Placid and he cited me for carrying a concealed weapon.
If it’s a sensitive issue in the community, if your peeing in someones front yard… etc… then yes, you’ll likely get a penalty.
But say… your out on a highway in the middle of farmland… I doubt it.
Race rules are rarely black and white… it’s up to the official, and the RD.
When I raced in Canberra, AUS for the world long course champs (ITU)… if you were caught peeing anywhere you weren’t supposed to… automatic DQ… I think it’s because it was the capital… although I broke this rule several times myself… oops.
I think the answer is if you are “reasonable” about it, you won’t get busted, but you are still taking a chance. So, behind a tree out in the middle of nowwhere, OK. To the guy who peed in the penalty tent, not OK (true story).
Look at it this way … when else (in the course of your life) are you going to be applauded for your ability to piss yourself? To hell with intervals. Spend that time working on your whizz.
Do you consider being arrested “penalized?” If so, then yes, you can be “penalized” for peeing. Almost every state has a law against public urination or indecent exposure.
The question is not so much “can” you be penalized, but “will” you be penalized. That I do not have an answer for.
At IMFL and the Gulf Coast Triathlon they tell you, you will be DQ’d and arrested, this resulted because a few years ago a athlete decided to whip it out in a front yard on the course, well it just happened to be a local lawyers house and his young kids were home. We almost lost our race venue because of that little pee break, so do us all a favor and use the proper etiquite (sp).
I got an offer to pee behind the truck at a local HIM at an aid station event when they didn’t have port-a-potties for two of four bike
aid stations. Wish I’d taken them up on the offer.
short answer: it’s a penalty, upto and including DQ.
long answer: who knows. Don’t get caught.
Recently at IMNZ, we were warned that it was an offence to be seen peeing in pubic. I did see a few people doing it however.
I guess it could fall under “indecent expose” or something like that, or by race rules “discarding equipment” or “littering”. Hehehe. I don’t know of anyone being pinged for it however.
I can’t pee on my bike either. However, if I have to pee, I know I’m over hydrated. I drink one drink bottle per hour, (slightly more if it’s hot) and have never had to pee in a race, and only ever lose 1-2kg in an IM race.
That is ideal weight loss according to my sports doctor. He used to be the head medical doctor for IMNZ. He’s done’ quite a bit of research on such things, and written several articles so I’m told (Dr Dale Speedy is his name for anyone wanting to research findings)
They penalize you for peeing on the move too. If you blaze through an aid station at 25 m.p.h. with your tally-whacker in one hand and the other hand on the bars you’ll get DQ’ed.
Discretion is the key. I noted that at Ironman New Zealand they issued a rather stern warning against this during the pre race meeting. As a result, I was rather discreet when answering nature’s call while on the bike.
