I am working on my position, going to start with a new stem, considering switching to the Vision basebar. My current basebar is oversized, 31.8. If I bought a new stem for it, decided I liked that length stem, could I then shim it to fit the smaller diameter of the Vision basebar, 26.0? Or is this not recommended?
Anyone know?
i’m pretty sure that just because you COULD it doesn’t mean that you* SHOULD. *stems are relatively inexpensive considering the piece of mind that you get from knowing that the front end that you lean on is solid. it just seems as if it’s an unnecessary risk but i’m no mechanic so i’m curious to see if one chimes in.
Yes.
Might want to use grip paste.
Yes, there are shims on the market for handlebars. Easton is the only one that springs to mind immediately as a possible choice. There should be others too.
Given the choice I would just invest in a 26.0 stem as I’ve seen some of those shims/handlebars slip.
.
I used these shims in the past with no slippage and no grip paste. FWIW
Yes, you can run the basebar with a shim with no problems. I used some shims I got from some profile design aerobars. Grip paste helps as well, and blue loctite on the stem face bolts.
+1 on grip paste
should be no problem. Only way if you got a 31.8 ergostem
I used Zipp’s shim the last two years on the Vtech base bar. Worked fine.
