Can Mountain bike help Du training

I have races coming up and to add to my road riding I was considering riding my mountain bike to and from work each day. It is not far (about 3 miles each way)but there are some decent climbs in each direction. One is a steep 500 m up a single track thru forest and the other is a 1 Km hard climb about 8 degrees on thre road.

Is this worth while? Should I save my energy for my tri bike and running? The races I have coming up are hilly with one having a 2km climb as part of the 30 km course. My thought is that this at least ensures some training should my day change as often happens being a business owner.

There’s no such thing as a junk mile!

Those extra 30 miles/week will help without affecting your du-specific training.

plus you will be saving the environment
.

more miles equal faster splits. ride them easy, unless late for work. I was the master at the 6 min TT when I was able to commute to work.

The climbing on the Mtn. bike WILL make you a better rider all around. You’ll become a much more efficient rider.

I’ve heard/read that Pro Mtn. bikers have the best pedal stroke, even better than track riders! I know after riding my Mtn. bike, I’m better on the road, especially climbing.

Ask Lance if he thinks the off road riding helped him :).

Thanks guys,

I tried it for the first time today after a hard road ride last night. Felt great and the climb through the forest was deadly…made me realize I’m not in hill shape.

Of course it can, and here’s why…

mountain biking is SH*T EATING FUN!!!

that’s my scientific explanation. of course, this may explain why i’m so slow. too much time having fun and not enough being serious; oh well, life’s too short!!
