I am sick of people always telling me I can’t do it. I, unlike most people who get into tri’s in their late 30’s was never an athlete growing up. I did my first sprint on a dare 3 years ago. Did my first marathon this past January with a 3:52, my first half IM this past April with a 5:25, and my first IM this past May with a 12:06. All along people have said it would be impossible!
Now I want to get to Kona. I know it will be tough but can it be done? I can think of an easy 45 minutes to an hour but the rest is gonna be tough.
Anybody out there who has similar story with a happy ending? Need inspiration before I start believing it is impossible.
To be honest, I get inspiration from watching the Ironman World Championships on youtube. Especially when I see an 80 year old man doing it for the 21 year in a row.
I also get inspiration from kids like Winter Vinecki.
Naysayers don’t go anywhere. If you want it bad enough it can happen. Often with less TIME than most think. My average weekly “big weeks” my first year I KQ’d were right nearly exact 10 hours. I’m not particularly talented in any single sport either. You work hard, be consistent, believe, be smart about recovery & picking your races and NEVER GIVE UP until it happens. I worked with someone who didn’t know how to swim 2 years ago, was a pure runner–and this year, in only her 3rd Ironman, qualifed for Kona. So yeah, it can happen. Even if the chances are harder next year with less slots in each of the KQ races. Don’t take NO for an answer. On the flip side, lay out a plan (long term) and be realistic above all. Realize you will need to make sacrifices along the way if you want it bad enough. While nothing is a given, everything is possible.

Don’t do it to prove anyone wrong. The only person that cares is you, and perhaps your close friends and family.

It can and has been done.
If they can do it, then so can you.
That’s how I look at it anyways. Put in an honest effort and Believe you can do it - and you’ll be surprised.

You’re either a huge prick, or you’re surrounded by incredibly negative people. I recommend a change either way.
