I have an old road frame with some Sora components on it I’d like to use but the rear-D is pretty banged up and I’d like to replace it.
Can I leave the Sora front-D and shifters as is and replace the RD/cassette/chain with SRAM 9 speed components or will that not work for some reason?
i’m fairly certain that the issue is with the actuation ratio on shifters.
because the FD is friction, you can use any shifter.
but Sram & Shimano have different ratios for the rear indexing (2:1 vs 1:1), so shimano shifters do not work with sram RDs.
OK… that makes sense. So changing derailleurs means changing shifters (brand wise).
Any idea if the SRAM 5 series comprable to the Sora set? I don’t want to replace junk with junk but this is a bike that will see limited milage so I don’t want to overspend. I can get all the SRAM 5 or SRAM 7 pieces locally and want to install myself as another step in my learning curve.
i can’t comment on that. hopefully somebody else will.
i can tell you however, that just last week nashbar had most sram components on sale, and today they have an extra 20% off everything. might be worth a look.
Yes - 9sp is 9sp. You can use Campy/ShimaNo/SRAM/Sampson with out issue.
r10 knows more than i do, i guess i was wrong. sorry for the confusion.
