Can I say I ran a 35:00 10KM?

So, I did a 10km race last weekend and it ended up being 9.60km on the Garmin and I finished in 33:38. PR for me!!! However can I claim I can run a 35min 10km?
In my heart I think not, as I didn’t actually run 10km in that time, however I’m pretty sure I could have kept up that pace for another 400m…

What do you reckon?

Go ahead, your Garmin is probably not 100% accurate anyway. If the race results for a 10KM say 33:38 then I’d say I run a sub-34 10KM, anyone asks point them to the result.

i wouldnt call it a pr, but i think it is ok to say xou can run around 35±. especially if your only reference for distance is your garmin. could have been 9.4 or could have been 10km.

I’d buy it.

How can someone set up a race and be so far off? Is it possible that they said 10km is about 6 miles and that’s what they measured? That would be lame.

If you ran that far then there is no doubt that you could have run that pace (5:38) for another .035 miles which would be 10K
.

I would say you ran a 33:38 and that your garmin was off or you ran a smart line the whole race. Other then that I say pat yourself on your back for running a great race!!!
BTW…nice way to humbley brag if there ever was a way :0)

Was the course certified? I’d trust that far more than a Garmin. If you drop the signal , especially during a corner it can give a short length.

You know what you know. You “know” you were sub-35… so your PR is sub 35.

It’s what you “know”, not what anyone else thinks… because, wait for it… wait for it…

know one else really cares.

(how many times has that line been written on ST, I wonder)

So revel in sub 35 and don’t think twice about it, don’t put asterisk beside it.

And start working like hell to go sub 34.

I also would not rely on your Garmin for an accurate distance. Mine can be all over the place sometimes. If the course was certified than I would rely on that. If not and/or you are actually convinced that it was short why not say you ran xx but the course may have been a tad short.

But really, go find an accurate course, Run your 35 and be done with it

If it’s a 10k that was on a course that was certified by a governing body then I say yes. If I ever run a PR at a tri, I will never claim it unless I can replicate in a standalone race that was certified by a governing body like USATF.

For example, I knew some folks who ran their 10k PR at the Nations Triathlon this year. However, none of them would seriously claim that time since most Garmins came up a bit shorter than 10k.

33:38…

yes. that’s fast. just own it.

I’m confident that it’s usually written “no one else really cares” when others say that.

Gamins have a margin of error. They are not as accurate as a tape measure. If the course was certified then it’s a PR. Gamins make mistakes, get erroneous location points and aren’t always accurate. Just because your Garmin says the course was short does not mean it was.

No becasue you didn’t run a 10km, you ran about 9.6k (give or take the error of a Garmin). Just like you don’t run 24 miles in 2:45 and say you ran a sub 3 marathon

I would say you ran a 33:38 and that your garmin was off or you ran a smart line the whole race. Other then that I say pat yourself on your back for running a great race!!!

Wasn’t there a thread on this recently - backdoor brag???

I do believe so.

No. You would have collapsed 15 secs later, like Wendy and Sian a few years ago. You would have just there on your butt before crawling to the finish line with
a 42.31. So shut up.

If it wasn’t TAC certified, No!

Was this in colorado? Golden Gallop 10k? Might explain those times! Besides the steep competition. On the other hand you have the 5k. How someone ran an 18:54 5k and got 200 dollars cash, sunglasses and a case of honeymilk is beyond me.
